Provoking Lionel Messi on the field is never a good idea and Jude Bellingham learned that lesson the hard way, according to Argentina fans. During the semi-final clash in Atlanta on Wednesday, July 15, there was a brief spat between the Argentina captain and the England midfielder right before the defending World Champions produced a sensational comeback to reach the World Cup 2026 final.

In the viral video, Bellingham was shown arguing with Messi and leaving with a smirk on his face. Messi remained calm and just nodded his head to show that he was ready for the battle on the field. Soon enough, the Argentine maestro set up both goals for his side as they eliminated England and got themselves into the summit clash with Spain on Sunday.

Right after the win, Argentina fans took to social media to roast Bellingham for his antics and remind him that Messi is a player that no one messes with.

This wasn’t the only time that Bellingham found himself in the limelight in Atlanta. Right after the loss, the England midfielder got into a tussle with Valentin Barco and some of the other Argentina players.

WHAT DID BELLINGHAM AND MESSI TALK ABOUT?

Speaking after the game, Bellingham revealed what he told Messi during their argument. The England star said, as quoted by USA Today, that they were discussing a foul that happened earlier and told the Argentina captain he was strong enough to take one.

“[We were] discussing a foul, actually,” Bellingham said. “But it was nothing bad. I’m sure everyone will do their thing and make it a big deal. But no, it was nothing really.”

“I thought there was a foul earlier and he said, ‘Well what about the one on me?’ and I was kind of saying, ‘You’re strong enough to take it,’ you know what I mean?”

Bellingham also said it was a privilege to face Messi on the field, despite England ending up on the losing side.

“It’s privilege to play against [Messi],” Bellingham said. “There was nothing against him. I’m obviously on the losing side which hurts a lot, but it’s a privilege to go against him.”

England will face France in the third-place playoff next on Saturday, July 18.
