Man peeping into IIT girls’ bathroom held | India News – Times of India
MUMBAI: Powai police on Tuesday arrested a 22-year-old IIT-Bombay canteen worker, employed on a contractual basis, in an alleged case of watching or capturing images of a student bathing in the girls hostel. The incident occurred last Sunday in Hostel 10, when accused Pintu Gariya allegedly scaled the drainage pipe to the first floor and captured female hostelites bathing through the bathroom window. The incident took place a day after students of Chandigarh University protested against the alleged secret filming of females.
Gariya was booked under IPC section for voyeurism (354-C). He will be produced before the Andheri Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Wednesday. He has been employed in the canteen for the last eight months. “Gariya was peeping through the window when the victim noticed him and alerted the hostel authorities. He is under arrest and his mobile has been seized. The Powai police will send the mobile to the forensic lab as they didn’t find any video captured,” said deputy commissioner of police (Zone X) Maheshwar Reddy.
IIT-B authorities confirmed that the culprit, a canteen worker of Hostel 10, was taken for interrogation by the Mumbai police. .
“The incident happened on Sunday night, when the victim raised the alarm after noticing someone recording her through the window slits in one of the bathrooms in H10 (girls’ hostel). She immediately reported the incident to the hostel council and to the authorities, after which there was manual checking of the canteen workers’ phones,” said a student.
The quick response team, including the dean (student affairs), were also called to the hostel, and the deleted footage was found in the phone of one of the canteen workers. The video was deleted before the accused was handed over to the police. An FIR was filed and all the canteen workers were taken for interrogation by the police at around midnight.
“There was an attempt to violate the personal space of women residents of a hostel by an employee of the hostel night canteen, by climbing a pipe duct. The investigation, including cyber investigation, is being carried out by the Mumbai police,” said the spokesperson from IIT-B.
The institute, as per the initial report, is not aware of any footage being shared from the phones confiscated from the culprit. “The canteen has been shut down immediately, and will reopen only if staffed exclusively by women. Gaps in the ducts, which may have been used by the suspects, have been closed,” added the spokesperson.
