Mauricio Pochettino signs contract extension as US coach until 2030 World Cup
Mauricio Pochettino will remain in charge of the United States men’s national team until the 2030 FIFA World Cup after agreeing to a new four-year contract with the US Soccer Federation.
US Soccer confirmed the extension on Monday, ending months of speculation over Pochettino’s future. Talks between the two sides had been underway well before the United States’ disappointing last-16 exit at the 2026 World Cup, with negotiations gathering pace after the tournament. Financial terms were not disclosed, although reports said the Argentine is set to receive a raise on the $6 million annual salary from his previous deal.
“It has become clear to us that there is tremendous potential to make the men’s national team program even stronger,” Pochettino said in a statement released by US Soccer.
“The passion we experienced from the fans throughout the World Cup only strengthened our belief in what is possible here. We are excited by the opportunity to bring all our experience and knowledge to even more areas of U.S. Soccer while helping strengthen the pathways for players, coaches and teams across the Federation.”
Pochettino took charge of the USMNT in 2024 and guided the team to the knockout stage of the home World Cup. The campaign began on a high as the United States produced one of the finest performances in its World Cup history with a commanding 4-1 win over Paraguay in the opening group match. Positive results against Australia and Bosnia and Herzegovina followed before the Americans were comprehensively beaten by Belgium in the Round of 16.
The defeat drew criticism of Pochettino’s tactical decisions, but the former Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea manager retained the backing of the federation. Several players have credited him with raising standards within the squad, although his tenure has also featured disagreements with senior figures, including Christian Pulisic, and occasional run-ins with the media.
Following the loss to Belgium, Pochettino said his first 20 months in charge had laid the foundation for the next phase of the project.
“It still hasn’t been two years working here. And we all know that a process is about a four-year cycle,” he said after the tournament.
“I think now we have a complete assessment from a lot of players. If we commit to be here in the future, we have a clear idea of our decisions for the future.”
The new deal reflects US Soccer’s belief that Pochettino remains the right man to build on that foundation as the team begins preparations for the 2030 World Cup.
