Left-arm off-spinner Mitchell Santner picked up 13 wickets in the Pune Test match to hand New Zealand their first-ever series victory against India. Santner ran riot against India in both innings of the game, forcing India to lose the 2nd Test match by 113 runs.

The spinner had cleaned up nearly the entire middle-order in the first innings of the Pune Test and helped the visitors get rid of the top-order in the final innings on Day 3 of the Test match. New Zealand spinners did the heavy lifting in the Pune Test match, after the pacers had done the trick in seaming conditions at Bengaluru.

The spinner had only 54 wickets from 28 Test matches before this in an underwhelming career with the red ball. Santner had played three Test matches before this in India where he had picked up a total of 9 wickets. For that matter, Santner was not considered for the first Test match in Bengaluru as well. However, with spin on offer in Pune, New Zealand took the punt to play Santner and Ajaz Patel together, which did wonders for the player and the visiting side.
