The Mizoram government on Friday announced a cash reward of Rs 25 lakh each for Indian women’s hockey players Lalremsiami and Lalthantluangi for their contribution to the team’s historic gold medal-winning campaign at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

The two Mizo players were part of the Indian women’s hockey team that defeated defending champions China 1-0 in the final to end a 44-year wait for the Asian Games gold medal.

Lalremsiami played a decisive role in the final, scoring the only goal of the match as India secured its first women’s hockey gold at the Asian Games since 1982.

Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma congratulated the Indian team on its historic victory and particularly praised Arjuna Awardee Lalremsiami for her contribution to the team’s success.

The state government’s announcement comes as recognition for the contribution of the two players to India’s landmark triumph. Lalremsiami and Lalthantluangi were part of the squad that held its nerve against China to secure the gold medal.

The victory also earned India an automatic qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, adding further significance to the team’s achievement.

Hockey India has also announced a cash reward for the entire women’s hockey team following its historic triumph. Each player will receive Rs 11 lakh, while every member of the support staff will be rewarded with Rs 5.5 lakh.

The Indian women’s team had last won the Asian Games gold in 1982. Its victory over China in Japan brought the title back after 44 years.

The historic achievement drew praise from political leaders across the country.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath congratulated the Indian women’s hockey team and said the country’s daughters had “created history”.

“The daughters of India have created history by bringing the Asian Games crown home! Congratulations to the Indian Women’s Hockey Team on winning the Gold Medal at the Asian Games 2026, ending a 44-year wait for the title,” Adityanath wrote on X.

He also highlighted India’s qualification for the Los Angeles Olympics.

“Our daughters have once again shown the world the strength, determination and excellence of Indian women in sport. The Gold also earns India a direct berth at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. Jai Hind!” he added.

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang also congratulated the team on its gold medal-winning performance.

“Heartiest congratulations to the entire team for bringing glory to the nation,” Tamang said in a post on X.

Tamang described the 1-0 victory over China as a moment of immense pride and praised the team’s determination, teamwork and fighting spirit.

“Their determination, teamwork, and fighting spirit have once again showcased the strength of Indian women in sports,” he said, adding that the triumph was a celebration of the hard work, resilience and spirit of the players.

For Mizoram, the achievement of Lalremsiami and Lalthantluangi adds another proud chapter to the state’s contribution to Indian sport. The Rs 25 lakh reward announced for each player recognises their role in a historic campaign that ended India’s long wait for the Asian Games women’s hockey title.
