NEW DELHI: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) will soon be a ‘deemed to be university’ in the ‘De Novo’ category. The decision was taken on Monday at the council’s executive committee meeting chaired by education minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
De-Novo Deemed University is an institution which can apply to UGC for setting up a new institution as deemed to be university which will undertake study and research in unique and emerging areas of knowledge that are not offered by any existing institution.
As per the agenda note of the meeting, as the apex organisation for school education, NCERT undertakes various activities and programmes, which include educational research and innovation, curriculum development and development of textual and teaching-learning materials among others.
The degree awarding bodies for the graduate and postgraduate programmes offered by the regional institutes of education of NCERT are affiliated with different state universities and one central university.
“At present, NCERT with its existing infrastructure and academic programmes at under-graduate, post-graduate and research levels is functioning at par with the country’s university system. The grant of deemed-to-be-university status to NCERT under the De Novo category will strengthen the academic functioning,” stated the agenda note.
NCERT was established in 1961 under the Society Act by the government to assist and advise in the matter of school education.
