Newcastle United have spent 128 million pounds during the close season on substantial acquisitions, according to manager Eddie Howe, but the club is still on the lookout for one more player to enhance squad depth.

The additional recruitment is part of the strategy as the team prepares to engage in two high-profile competitions: the Premier League and the Champions League.

Recent purchases include the Italian player Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes, and Tino Livramento. Despite these significant additions, Howe showed a propensity for adding to the team, especially given that Newcastle have qualified for the Champions League for the first time in 20 years.

Ahead of their Premier League opener against Aston Villa on Saturday, Howe conveyed his plans in a press conference. He said, “I’d love one more player personally and I think then we’d have the ideal depth at this moment with the injuries that we currently have.” However, he remained uncertain due to approval of the deal and potential injuries before the transfer window closes.

Among the injured is midfielder Joe Willock. After suffering a hamstring injury last season, Willock is still on recovery leave and will not be able to play until mid-September. On a positive note, defender Fabian Schar is back from injury and his return to training is encouraging.

Likewise, newcomer Tonali from AC Milan has settled in well during pre-season. Howe was especially complimentary about him, stating, “I have to compliment Sandro on how he has handled the move and how he is adapting to the changes. I think we’re in a good place.”

Newcastle United’s strategy of focusing on squad depth and early recruitment has shown positive signs, but it remains to be seen how well it plays out during the crucial upcoming matches. The club’s performance in the Premier League and the Champions League will be watchful events this season.
