DHARWAD/BENGALURU: On the day BJP filed a complaint with the Election Commission of India against Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge for allegedly calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi a “poisonous snake”, Union home minister Amit Shah said at a rally on Friday that support for Modi would increase the more that Congress functionaries abused him.
“By abusing Modi, Congress cannot instigate the people of Karnataka,” Shah said at a poll rally in Navalgund, Dharwad district about 450km from Bengaluru. “No matter how much you abuse Modi, the lotus will bloom.”
He added: “Congress functionaries had earlier said ‘Modi, teri khabar khudegi (Modi, we will dig your grave)’, Sonia Gandhi called him ‘maut ka saudagar (merchant of death)’, Priyanka Gandhi says ‘neechi jati ke log (people of low caste)’, and he (Kharge) says ‘vishela saanp (venomous snake)’. Congress people, you have lost your mind.”
Pointing out that Modi is welcomed across the world with a lot of respect, Shah said: “Modi has increased India’s pride in the world, and he has worked to make the country prosperous. He has made India’s infrastructure strong and borders safe. Wherever Modi goes in the world, people welcome him with slogans of ‘Modi-Modi’. But Kharge calls him a venomous snake.”
On Congress filing a police complaint against him for his recent comments that there would be communal riots if Congress formed government, Shah said, “They filed it because I said we have banned PFI (Popular Front of India). We have made Karnataka safe. I have no fear.”
Union minister Shobha Karandlaje, who filed the complaint against Kharge, said it wasn’t the first time he had resorted to “name-calling”. In their complaint BJP said: “Last year, while campaigning in Gujarat, Kharge had called Modi a ‘100-head Ravan’. Kharge should behave in a responsible manner.”
