PATNA: At a time when 20 opposition parties have given a call to abstain from the inauguration of the new Parliament building, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar on Saturday said that there was “no need” for a new Parliament building.
Nitish also said the new Parliament building was an attempt to distort history by those who had no contribution in the country’s freedom struggle.
Responding to media queries after attending a state government’s event organised to commemorate the country’s first prime minister Jawahar Lal Nehru on his death anniversary in the state capital Patna, the Bihar CM also expressed displeasure over President Droupadi Murmu and Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankar, who is also the chairman of Rajya Sabha, not being invited to the new Parliament inaugural function.
“There is no need for a new Parliament building. Was it required? … Even in the beginning when there was a discussion about construction of a new Parliament, I was not feeling good. The existing Sansad Bhavan is attached to our history. When the country got freedom, everything began from that place. The same historic building (Sansad Bhavan) should have been expanded (if required). There is no meaning to constructing a new Parliament. Will you change the entire history?” Nitish asked.
The JD(U) leader, who is currently busy uniting opposition parties against the BJP ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, also said those who are in the government at the centre were making all efforts to distort the history of the country.
“They want to change the history of the freedom struggle,” Nitish said and added, “But we have been giving due importance to all things related to the country’s freedom movement.”
The CM also said, “It is very surprising that the President of India Droupadi Murmu and the Vice-President, who is the chairman of the Rajya Sabha, have not been invited to the inaugural event.”
