Joe Root is on the verge of breaking Javed Miandad’s record for runs in Test cricket against New Zealand. Root needs 189 runs to go past the Pakistani legend during the second Test, starting Friday, December 6 at the Basin Reserve in Wellington. Currently, Root has notched 1970 runs from 19 matches at an average of 54.06 with five hundreds and eight fifties to his name.

Miandad played against the Black Caps from 1976 to 1993, where he made 1919 runs from 18 matches at an average of 79.95 with seven centuries and six fifties to show for his efforts. Rahul Dravid (1659), Sachin Tendulkar (1595), Jacques Kallis (1543), Allan Border (1500), Chris Gayle (1258) and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (1232) are amongst the top run-getters against the Kiwis.

Joe Root on cusp of another landmark

Root is also one fifty plus score short of becoming the batter with most fifty plus scores in Tests against New Zealand. Currently, Root and Miandad are locked on 13 apiece. Dravid, Kallis and Tendulkar have 12 fifty plus scores each.

Since his 262-run knock against Pakistan at the Multan Cricket Stadium, Root is looking for a Test fifty. In the opening Test against the Black Caps at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch, Root scored a duck in the first over after Nathan Smith cleaned him up.

In the second innings, however, Root looked much more fluent as he scored an unbeaten 23 off 15 balls, laced with three fours and a six. Root is the leading run-scorer for England in Tests after he went back Alastair Cook earlier this year.

England are currently placed sixth in the table in the World Test Championship 2023-25 with a points’ percentage of 42.50 thanks to wins in 10 out of 20 matches.
