World Bank approves USD 1 billion to support India’s fight against COVID-19 | Economy News

0

[ad_1]

New Delhi: The World Bank on Friday approved USD 1 billion ‘Accelerating India’s COVID-19 Social Protection Response Program’ to support the country’s efforts for providing social assistance to the poor and vulnerable households, severely impacted by the pandemic.

This takes the total commitment from the World Bank towards emergency COVID-19 response in India to USD 2 billion.

A USD 1 billion support was announced last month to support India’s health sector.

The response to the COVID-19 pandemic around the world has required governments around the world to introduce social distancing and lockdowns in unprecedented ways, said Junaid Ahmad, World Bank Country Director in India in a webinar interaction with the media.

These measures, intended to contain the spread of the virus have, however, impacted economies and jobs especially in the informal sector. India with the world’s largest lockdown has not been an exception to this trend, he said.

Of the USD 1 billion commitment, USD 550 million will be financed by a credit from the International Development Association (IDA) the World Bank’s concessionary lending arm and USD 200 million will be a loan from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), with a final maturity of 18.5 years including a grace period of five years.

The remaining USD 250 million will be made available after June 30, 2020.

DDCA Ombudsman calls for re-election, orders removal of joint secretary | Cricket News

0

[ad_1]

With an eye on the lack of leadership at the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA), Ombudsman Justice Deepak Verma (Retd) has made it clear that elections for vacant posts will be held as soon as normalcy returns and the lockdown regulations are relaxed by the government that have been implemented to contain the spread of coronavirus.

In his order, the ombudsman has made it clear that while he had already called for election for the post of president back in February, things had to be put on hold due to the lockdown, but the process shall be started as soon as normalcy returns.

“It is to be brought to notice of all, once again that vide my order(s) dated 15.02.2020 it was directed that elections for the post(s) of president of DDCA be held. Thereafter, post of treasurer also fell vacant and it was directed that election for the said post be held/done along with the election of post of President of DDCA. Pursuant thereto, Navin Chawla, former Chief Election Commissioner of lndia was requested to act as election officer in order to hold elections for vacant posts in DDCA.

“All this would have gone smoothly, but for the rapid and fast spread of coronavirus, total lockdown has been imposed throughout the country w.e.f. 25.03.2020, which is still continuing, being extended from time to time. It is anybody’s guess, when it will be completely lifted and to what extent. Thus, the process of election, for which, ball was already set rolling, has gone topsy turvey. But it may be clarified that, once things attain normalcy, elections would take place at the earliest, so as to enable DDCA, to function, in accordance with its Articles of Association and adhering to the provisions of Indian Companies Act,” he said.

The ombudsman also ordered the removal of joint secretary Rajan Manchanda for his behaviour on December 29, 2019 which as per the ombudsman led to a huge public fight amongst DDCA officials during their Annual General Meeting. He asked the general body of the association to take note of his order and ratify the decision. Till such time, the ombudsman has directed him against exercising his powers.

“It leaves no amount of doubt, in my mind that he (Rajan Manchanda) was soldy instrumental in causing huge hungama and ruckus on the stage on 29.12.2019. Such type of action, behaviour and attitude was highly uncalled for in the AGM, more so from a Joint Secretary of DDCA. I am making this recommendation to the General Body because Rajan Manchanda has been elected as Director by the General Body and it is the General Body which must take the decision to remove him.

“Therefore, I direct that this order shall be placed before the General Body (either in Extra Ordinary Meeting or Annual General Meeting, whichever is earlier) as an agenda item and a final decision shall be taken by the General Body but till such time exercising the powers under clause (6)(iv), 7(c) and 7(d), he is hereby restrained from exercising his powers either as Joint Secretary and or member of any of the Committee of the DDCA until final order/decision is taken in this regard by the General Body,” he said.

A DDCA official applauded the decision of the ombudsman and said that these corrective measures were need of the hour.

“It’s a welcome decision by the ombudsman. He has rightly left the decision regarding the removal of Rajan Manchanda to the General Body which could even think about removing him from the membership of the association. In restraining the persons from functioning with immediate effect he has also prevented these people from misusing their positions to further their own interests. It’s high time for fresh elections to take place,” he pointed.

England cricketers set to return to individual training from next week | Cricket News

0

[ad_1]

In what would be the first step towards the resumption of action since coronavirus lockdown, the players of the England men’s cricket team will make a return to individual skills-based training from next week.

Confirming the news, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said that the training would take place in adherence to safety protocols and social distancing measures for players and staff members as set out by the government’s elite sport return to training guidance.

“The ECB’s plan has been designed in line with the Government’s guidance, and we will continue to ensure we comply with their regulations as it develops,” the ECB official website said.

The centrally-contracted bowlers and bowlers who are invited through county system will begin an individualised training programme from Wednesday at various venues across the country.

Other players will start their respective training programmes on an individual basis after two weeks.

According to the ECB’s  Men’s Elite Performance Programme, players will be required to train individually on a staggered basis with a coach, physio and, where possible, a strength and conditioning coach in attendance. The players also need to ensure they observe strict social-distancing, hygiene and temperature testing protocols as set by the government during their training sessions.

The players will not be allowed to use the dressing rooms and other facilities of the venue.

Reflecting on the development, Ashley Giles, Managing Director – England Men’s Cricket, said that the training would serve as one of the first steps for the players in their return to action ahead of international cricket potentially resuming later this summer.

“The safety of players, staff and our community is our first priority throughout this protocol. We are committed to adhering to public health guidelines and Government directives intended to prevent the spread of COVID-19.To be clear, we will only train and potentially play cricket behind closed doors if we know it is absolutely safe to do so and is fully supported by the Government,”he added.

On April 24, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) had decided to further extend the suspension of professional cricket in the country until at least July 1 due to the coronavirus pandemic that has brought the entire world to standstill. The board had initially suspended professional cricket in the country until May 28.

Earlier, England’s two-match Test series against Sri Lanka due to take place in March as well as West Indies’ tour to the country for three Tests slated to take place in June were postponed in the wake of the pandemic.

Airlines’ face mask policies: Southwest memo says don’t deny boarding

0

[ad_1]

“We will not deny boarding solely based on a Customer’s refusal to wear a face covering,” the memo reads.

This seems to be a more lax policy than some of the other airlines.

American Airlines’ policy says customers “may be denied boarding” for not wearing a mask. United’s policy would allow boarding in most cases but the policy notes, “there could be an isolated situation where a customer may be denied boarding as a last resort.”

JetBlue Airways’ language seems to be the most restrictive, with its memo saying, “Customers who refuse to comply with our policy will be denied boarding.”

Southwest Airlines wants flight attendants to inform customers of the policy but not enforce it, according to the airline’s memo.

Southwest flight attendants should approach the situation with “empathy and respect,” the memo reads.

“You are expected to inform Customers of our face covering requirement but are not expected to be the enforcers — ask the Customer to comply with wearing a face covering if they are able.”

Southwest provided a statement to CNN Thursday, saying that as a society we must “partly rely on common sense and responsible actions.” Employees are instructed to “respectfully request” that customers abide by the mask policy.

“Although Southwest is not denying boarding based solely upon a Customer not wearing a mask, we are providing masks and strongly encouraging Customers comply with the policy out of respect for the well-being of other Customers and our Employees during these unprecedented times,” the statement reads.

Passenger cooperation is key

For the most part, it seems that US airlines will rely on passenger cooperation rather than strict enforcement of their mask requirements.

Separate memos obtained by CNN that American Airlines (AAL) sent to its pilots and flight attendants show that customers may be denied boarding for not wearing a mask. But once on the plane, “the face covering policy will become more lenient” and “the flight attendant’s role is informational, not enforcement,” the pilot memo reads. It was first obtained by Reuters.
The American Airlines flight attendant memo describes how they should handle customers who don’t comply with the policy: “Please encourage them to comply, but do not escalate further. Likewise, if a customer is frustrated by another customer’s lack of face covering, please use situational awareness to de-escalate the situation.”
Like the American Airlines’ policy, United (UAL) makes exceptions for a variety of reasons including medical conditions. Its policy also points to avoiding confrontation.

“If for some reason this policy causes a disturbance onboard, we’ve counseled our flight attendants to use their de-escalation skills, and they do have the flexibility to reseat customers on the aircraft as needed,” United said in a statement.

JetBlue (JBLU) suggests workers at airports tell customers: “To help keep us all safe, customers and crewmembers are now required to wear face coverings.” The airline says there will be “challenges” to enforcing its policy.
Masks on airplanes: Where things stand on personal protection and social distancing

In a nod to how charged wearing masks has become, the policy says, “Please be sensitive to the current environment — remember to leverage our Hospitality Promises and ‘Ask, Bargain & Convince’ skills to de-escalate a situation with a non-compliant or frustrated customer, and use your best judgement to uphold our service standards in order to minimize disruptions. While customers failing to comply will not prompt the need for diversion or immediate removal, our inflight crewmembers should advise an airports crewmember upon arrival.”

Its policy also reminds workers that they aren’t allowed to make people leave the terminal for not wearing a mask.

CNN has reached out to Delta (DAL) as well.
The nation’s airlines have all implemented policies that passengers must wear masks, following guidance from the CDC. But the FAA and TSA have not passed policies requiring masks for passengers as a matter of government-enforced rules.

Facebook investing $1 billion to build subsea cable to connect Africa | Technology News

0

[ad_1]

San Francisco: Facebook has committed more than $1 billion to develop a new sub-sea cable link to improve Internet connectivity in Africa. Africa is currently the least connected continent, with just over a quarter of its 1.3 billion people connected to the internet.

“Facebook has partnered with leading African and global operators to build `2Africa`, the most comprehensive subsea cable to serve the African continent and Middle East region.

A transformational cable, 2Africa is one of the largest subsea cable projects in the world and will interconnect 23 countries in Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.

“At 37,000 km long, 2Africa will be nearly equal to the circumference of the Earth. The project is impressive for more than length alone: It will provide nearly three times the total network capacity of all the subsea cables serving Africa today,” Facebook said in a statement.

When completed, this new route will deliver much-needed internet capacity, redundancy, and reliability across Africa; supplement a rapidly increasing demand for capacity in the Middle East; and support further growth of 4G, 5G, and broadband access for hundreds of millions of people.

The first subsea cable system to seamlessly connect East and West Africa across a single open system, `2Africa` will enable new avenues of communication from coast to coast.

“In addition, we are developing a new crossing that links the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, the first in this region in over a decade,” said Facebook.

Biden says he does not remember Tara Reade

0

[ad_1]

Biden made the remarks in an interview that aired Thursday evening on “The Last Word.” The presumptive Democratic nominee for president appeared alone in one segment of the program, and was then joined by Stacey Abrams, the former Democratic Georgia gubernatorial nominee.

Abrams is a potential vice-presidential pick for Biden, and he asked that she join him on the program. He complimented her work on voting rights, saying she “knows what she’s doing and she’s incredibly capable person.”

“Her story has changed considerable times,” Biden said at one point. “This claim has changed as it’s gone on.”

Last year, Reade was among several women who said that Biden had made her feel uncomfortable. She told The Washington Post that he touched her neck and shoulders but did not mention the alleged assault.

This year Reade added to the story, saying that he pushed her against a wall in a Senate hallway and put his hand up her skirt.

“Nothing like this ever happened,” Biden said Thursday. “She should be heard and the story should be vetted but ultimately the truth matters.”

“You should vote your heart,” Biden said. “I wouldn’t vote for me if I believed Tara Reade.”

Toward the end of the interview, Biden was asked more broadly about what role he played related to Michael Flynn, the former Trump national security adviser who was under investigation at the end of the Obama administration and was showing up on intelligence reports that captured his communications with foreign officials.

Biden did not address a newly declassified list that listed him among several dozen Obama administration officials who may have had access to reports that revealed Flynn’s previously redacted name.

Biden denied knowing about any investigations, saying, “I was never a part or had any knowledge of any criminal investigation into Flynn when I was in office. Period. Not one single time.”

During a question-and-answer session, Biden was asked if he’d promise not to pardon Trump — and commit to taking a different course than President Gerald Ford, who succeeded President Richard Nixon and absolved him.

“Absolutely, yes. I commit,” Biden said, adding he would leave it to his attorney general, who, he said, “is not the president’s lawyer.”

Matt Viser contributed to this report.

Bundesliga to allow five substitutions if season restarts | Football News

0

[ad_1]

Bundesliga teams will be allowed up to five substitutions per match when it restarts on Saturday after the coronavirus stoppage, while teams will be relegated provided the season is completed, the German Football League (DFL) said on Thursday.

Short-term venue changes will also be permitted if health reasons dictate such a need and the season will continue beyond its re-scheduled finish date of June 30 and into July if necessary, the DFL said following a general assembly.

The Bundesliga will be the first major European league to resume when it gets going following a two-month break due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The second tier 2. Bundesliga will also get under way.

All matches will be played behind closed doors, and progress will be closely watched around Europe.

Doubts have already surfaced after second tier Dynamo Dresden`s entire squad were quarantined by the local health authority following two positive tests, forcing their first two games to be postponed.

However, when three players at Cologne tested positive, only the players affected were isolated. Under German law, the final decision in such cases lies with local health authorities.

Soccer`s rule-making body IFAB ruled earlier this month that teams could make five substitutions instead of the usual three as a temporary measure but said the final decision lay with competition organisers.

The DFL became the first major league to implement the change which is designed to help teams cope with fixture congestion as they rush to complete the season.

The DFL said that all but one of its 36 member clubs voted in favour of maintaining relegation.

“(The assembly) unanimously confirmed, with one abstention, the intention to carry out the current 2019/20 season in its entirety, including relegation, as far as legally possible and, if necessary, to continue beyond 30 June in July,” it said.

No decision was taken on what would happen if the season had to be called off for health reasons.

“In the event that… the season has to be abandoned prematurely, a regulation regarding the sporting classification is to be developed within the following two weeks,” it said.

Venues could be changed should a local outbreak make it inadvisable to stage a match. “There will be the possibility of a match being played in another stadium at short notice for overriding compelling legal, organisational and/or security reasons,” the DFL said.

Bayern Munich, chasing an eighth successive title, currently lead the table with 55 points from 25 games, four ahead of Borussia Dortmund with RB Leipzig third on 50. There are nine rounds of matches to play.

At the bottom, Werder Bremen and Paderborn are in the drop zone with Fortuna Duesseldorf in 16th, which is the relegation/promotion playoff spot.

Life after lockdown in Vietnam

Hanoi, Vietnam (CNN) — As the faint smell of smoke rose up from the sidewalk and into my bedroom, I jumped up and stepped out onto the balcony to survey the Hanoi streets.

The owner of my building was burning joss paper (fake money) as an offering of good fortune to their ancestors.

After a week with no new Covid-19 cases, Vietnam’s government had just eased its 22-day social distancing initiative, allowing some businesses to reopen on April 23.

Signs of life had already begun to emerge the prior day. Honking from the streets grew louder as more people rode around on their motorbikes, while local shopkeepers swept the sidewalk in front of their store — all good signs the city was poised to reopen as planned.

And now, domestic tourism is resuming as well, as airlines increase flight schedules and hotels re-open throughout the country.

Vietnam had zero Covid-19 deaths

It may seem like Vietnam got off easy, but that’s not by chance.

With just 288 cases and zero deaths, this Southeast Asia country acted faster than most nations, shutting its borders with China in late January and suspending visas to prevent foreigners from entering the country. (In comparison, Malaysia has recorded close to 7,000 confirmed Covid-19 cases, Thailand has just over 3,000 cases and Singapore has more than 25,000.)

I arrived in Vietnam in January, before the first case hit Ho Chi Minh City, the first stop on my Vietnam trip.

As I traveled north from Ho Chi Minh City to Danang, Hoi An, Hue, Tam Coc and finally Hanoi, I watched the government carefully isolate at-risk communities, contact-trace citizens and quarantine anyone coming into the country.

During the lockdown, my three-month tourist visa expired, but fortunately I was allowed to extend it penalty-free for another three-months for a fee of $365 — more than triple the normal cost.

In mid-March, doctors, accompanied by government officials, made the rounds to my homestay in Tam Coc, ensuring guests were safe and virus free.

Like clockwork, both morning and evening, we would hear updates blasted from loudspeakers on vehicles making their way through the streets. It seemed that at any one time, everyone knew where the most recent cases were, in full detail.

The country’s fast and knowledgeable management, paired with its strict government policies, allowed Vietnam to squash the virus more effectively than most nations.

Because of this, they were able to safely and slowly lift restrictions in stages. High-risk areas like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City had tighter rules, including the closure of non-essential businesses like bars, tea houses, karaoke venues and sporting events, while gatherings of more than 10 people were banned.

Though some restrictions remain in place, last Friday, Ho Chi Minh City lifted the ban on certain entertainment facilities and non-essential businesses, including pubs, cinemas and spas.

Hanoi this week reopened its historical attractions to visitors, while walking streets and markets in its popular Hoan Kiem District reopen May 15.

A city of smiles as life resumes

Would you like some eggs with your coffee? In Hanoi, ca phe trung — or egg coffee — is a local favorite.

After traveling north to Hanoi in late-March, I spent 22-days in lockdown lounging around my short-term apartment.

On April 23, I couldn’t wait to go see which restaurants and cafes around Hanoi were welcoming customers back in.

The street food stalls were among the first to put out their tiny plastic chairs. The smell of boiled chicken and the slurping sounds of happy locals filled either side of Chân Cầm street.

But I wasn’t after a bowl of pho; I desperately needed a coconut coffee. So, I climbed up the stairs to my favorite local cafe, Loading T, and the owner’s smiling face said it all.

He showed me to a seat and handed me a menu. Even though I knew exactly what I wanted to order, I’ve never been so excited to flip through the pages of a menu before.

The tables around me were filled with young people talking louder than normal, or maybe I just wasn’t used to the sound of other people’s voices yet. Either way, it was clear. They were thrilled to be back in a local cafe, a vital part of the youth culture in Vietnam.

After cooking the same five meals throughout lockdown, the street food stalls I’ve been meaning to try grew more and more appealing with every bolognese sauce I made. So, as soon as I could, I headed out for a bowl of bun cha.
Hidden down a small alleyway in the Old Quarter lies Bun Cha Hang Quat, one of the city’s best versions of this local noodle and pork dish. While walking past women squatting down next to coal fires turning trays of fragrant marinated pork and separating thin noodles into bowls, my mouth started to water.

I turned the corner and was surprised to see a dozen tables packed with people hunched over their bowls, dipping their vermicelli in the warm, meaty broth. There was no social-distancing going on here.

Walking back to my apartment full and happy, I noticed others doing the same. There were small groups of older women smiling and laughing on the sidewalk while men smoked from their long bamboo pipes and watched the traffic.

Domestic travel encouraged

Mountainous Sapa has become one of Vietnam’s hottest tourist destinations. Here’s a look inside its newest luxury hotel, the stunning Hotel de la Coupole.

These days, it doesn’t feel like the city has dramatically changed. Yes, everyone is wearing masks out in public now, and only about 75% of businesses have reopened. But Hanoi feels back to its pre-Covid self.

Escaping the devastation and trauma of many other places like Italy and the United States, the virus feels like a blip.

But for many Vietnamese in the tourism and hospitality industry, it’s been devastating. According to multiple local media reports, Vietnam lost $7 billion in tourism revenue in January-February.

For now, recovery is focused on domestic tourism. On April 23, the Ministry of Transport started to increase domestic flights and trains to major destinations with limited passenger capacity.

Once the government gave word that things were safe and would open again in late-April, I was already planning my trip north to Sapa to support the region’s local businesses and get some fresh air.

I couldn’t wait to trek through the rice paddies, photograph the water buffalo and be surrounded by nature.

Like many businesses, the sustainable Topas Ecolodge resort was closed for nearly two months. The rustic retreat, perched high above Sapa Valley, welcomes its first guests on May 15, and I’m excited to be one of them.

Sona Mohapatra hosts a digital musical concert for 17,000 healthcare workers | Music News

[ad_1]

New Delhi: Most of the younger generation has grown up on stories of how our leading artists like Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar would go perform at the border for soldiers to boost their morale. Even cricketing hero MS Dhoni turned singer last year to entertain the troops. In times when the pandemic is a real-time war, our frontline healthcare workers have assumed the responsibility of donning the armour and become soldiers to battle it out.

It’s, thus, heartening to see artistes like Sona Mohapatra working round the clock to prepare for a concert to boost the morale of medical professionals.

The songstress is all set to do a musical webinar for healthcare professionals, nurses, doctors, ward boys, pharmacists to buck up their morale. Apparently the show has already seen 17,000 online registrations, all of whom will be tuning in live for this webinar.

Sona Mohapatra will be singing her hit tracks starting with Ambarsariya, Naina, Bahara, Bekhauff, Rupaiya, Rangabati & Dil Aaj Kal amongst her other hits & will also do a special section for requests from the healthcare professionals who have registered. This will be a 90-minute performance including interactions from her home studio Tarasha.

Speaking about it, Sona said, “Our medical professionals and health care workers are the heroes & warriors who need our love and support. They have been working extra shifts at work because the medical staff is in short supply. It’s a high-risk job where they are exposed directly to the virus, experiencing the raw vulnerability of human life at the border between life & death. Nothing prepares people adequately for a situation like this. I wanted to give them uninterrupted entertainment, cheer for them, pay tribute to them and let them know how thankful we are that they are getting up and going to work for us every day. Their job requires commitment and courage and I wanted to do our bit in making them feel special. Proud to have heard in the PM’s latest speech that India is manufacturing 2 lac PPE kits a day & I hope that all healthcare workers are therefore safeguarded from the disease.”
