NEW DELHI: Border disputes with China featured in bilateral talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida in New Delhi on Saturday, the ministry of external affairs said.
Briefing reporters about the wide-ranging discussions between the two leaders, foreign secretary Harsh Shringla said the Indian side informed the Japanese delegation of the situation in Ladakh as well as Chinese attempts to amass troops near the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Shringla said that Kishida was informed about India’s discussions with China on border-related issues.
“[The] Japanese PM also briefed us on his own perspective vis-a-vis East & South China sea,” Shringla said.
He said that India has made it clear that unless border issues are resolved with peace & tranquility, it will not consider the relationship (with China) to be business as usual.
“Normalcy would depend on the progress in issues we are discussing,” Shringla said.
During their discussion, the two leaders also touched upon regional security and cooperation.
Speaking at the 14th annual India-Japan summit after his talks with the Japanese PM, PM Modi said that deepening ties between the two nations will help in encouraging peace, prosperity and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
Kishida said that India and Japan should keep working together for an “open and free Indo-Pacific.”
India and Japan are members of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad), a security framework that also includes the United States and Australia.
The four-nation grouping is seen as a force to check China’s expansionist behaviour in the Indo-Pacific region.
