CHANDIGARH: International Kabaddi player Sandeep Nangal was shot dead on Monday evening by four assailants in Punjab’s Jalandhar district as he was coming out of a tournament site, police said.
The incident took place when a Kabaddi tournament was in play at Mallian Kalan village of Shahkot.
“Four people arrived in a car and shot him during an ongoing match. FIR has been registered, we’re investigating. Further details can be given after post mortem,” said Satinder Singh, SSP Jalandhar Police.
Jalandhar (Rural) Deputy Superintendent of Police (Nakodar) Lakhwinder Singh said the 40-year-old player hailed from Nangal Ambiyan village in Shahkot.
Nangal, along with his family, was settled in England but he used to organise Kabaddi tournaments in Punjab.
Police said that when Sandeep came out of the tournament site, four unidentified assailants opened fire at him. Police suspect eight to 10 bullets were pumped into the Kabaddi player. The DSP said 10 empty bullet shells were found from the spot.
After Sandeep was shot, he was taken to a hospital in Nakodar where he was declared dead, said police.
A video of the firing incident also went viral on social media.
Meanwhile, Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal condemned the murderous attack and demanded action against the killers.

“I strongly condemn the murderous attack on Sandeep Nangal Ambiyan, a promising Kabaddi player. His untimely demise is a never ending loss to the Kabaddi world. Condolences to Sandeep’s family and kabaddi lovers, I demand immediate arrest of the killers,” he tweeted in Punjabi.
