West Indies white-ball coach Daren Sammy was elated over star debutant Shamar Joseph’s heroics in the recently-concluded Test series against Australia.

Sammy reckoned that Joseph has definitely created a ‘good headache’ for the team management with the upcoming T20 World Cup ahead and is being seen as an all-format player for the West Indies.

Sammy expressed his eagerness to have the young pacer in the white-ball squad once he recovers from his toe injury.

Joseph had a memorable debut for the West Indies in the 2-match Test series against Australia. The rookie pacer, hailing from a remote village on the Caribbean Islands, helped his team script history at the Gabba.

The West Indies won a Test match on Australian soil after 27 years on the back of Joseph’s incredible spell of 7/68 on Day 4 of the Test. The 24-year-old ran through the Australian batting line-up in the Pink Ball Test as the visitors won by 8 runs.

“He will definitely be an all-format player,” Sammy told ESPNcricinfo.

“I can’t wait to get my hands on him in this squad. But look, everything has a process to it. That’s the way myself and the chairman of selectors operate. What he’s done, he’s created a really good headache for me with the World Cup coming up, building forward in the ODI team.”

WHEN SHAMAR JOSEPH NEARLY BROKE HIS TOE

On Day 3 of the Test match, Mitchell Starc’s toe-crushing yorker to Joseph led to him being retired hurt. Despite his toe injury, the pacer bowled 11.5 overs to win the game for his team, which was pretty much in the hands of the hosts when Day 4 began. His inspiring journey left the entire cricket fraternity in awe.

Shamar wasn’t included in the West Indies squad for the white ball series against Australia. Instead, he was going to participate in the ILT20 league in Dubai. Due to a toe injury, Joseph won’t be able to participate in the tournament. Sammy recognised that it was important for the pacer to take enough rest and spend time with his family.

“We ride the wave that’s happening there, but we won’t go crazy. If the guy’s injured, let him go home and rest,” Sammy said.

“That’s probably the first time he’s been away from home for so long. He’s got a young family. So we understand. Whatever we do is well-planned and well-thought-out.”

“I think going home to his family, enjoying this moment is important. Because victories like that don’t come around all the time. It’s important that you enjoy these moments. Savour it so that it keeps you motivated to have more moments like that,” Sammy concluded.
