India captain Shubman Gill climbed three places to reach No. 2 in the ODI batting rankings on Wednesday, June 24. Fresh off his first ODI series win as captain of the Indian team, Gill moved ahead of Virat Kohli, who missed the three-match series due to injury.

Gill now has 791 rating points and is within touching distance of No. 1-ranked Daryl Mitchell, who sits 24 points ahead of the Indian batter.

Shubman Gill‘s teammate Ishan Kishan jumped a whopping 21 places after his consistent performances in the three-match series, moving up to 43rd in the ODI batting rankings.

Meanwhile, England batter Joe Root, who captained his team in the second Test against New Zealand in the absence of Ben Stokes, climbed to the top spot in the Test batting rankings, dethroning teammate Harry Brook. Root recently became only the second batter in the history of Test cricket to cross 14,000 runs, behind only the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. The England batter is now within touching distance of surpassing the former India cricketer – widely regarded as the greatest batter in the history of the sport.

There was significant movement in the bowling rankings as well. India’s bowling trio of Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna and Washington Sundar all made notable gains following their clean sweep against Afghanistan.

Arshdeep climbed 16 places to 22nd, Prasidh moved up 34 spots to joint 58th, while Washington jumped 17 positions to joint 71st.

HENRY EQUALS JASPRIT BUMRAH

With New Zealand levelling the three-match Test series against England at 1-1, there has been a major shift in the ICC Men’s Test Rankings. New Zealand pacer Matt Henry climbed to the top of red-ball cricket following his 11-wicket haul in the second Test against England. The 34-year-old now shares the No. 1 spot with India’s Jasprit Bumrah.

Bumrah had held the top ranking outright since overtaking Kagiso Rabada in November 2024, but Henry’s match-winning performance helped New Zealand level the series and propelled him to the summit.

In doing so, Henry joined an exclusive New Zealand list alongside Jack Cowie, who first achieved the feat in 1947, and the legendary Richard Hadlee, who dominated the rankings between 1984 and 1990.

Henry’s current rating of 870 points is also among the highest achieved by a New Zealander in Test cricket. Only Hadlee, who reached 909 rating points in 1985, and former captain Kane Williamson, who peaked at 919 batting points in 2021, have recorded higher ICC ratings.
