Stephen Fleming replaces McCullum as England Test coach, Joe Root returns as captain
Stephen Fleming has been appointed as the new head coach of England’s men’s Test team, replacing Brendon McCullum, while Joe Root has returned as Test captain following Ben Stokes’ retirement from international cricket.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed the appointments after what it described as a rigorous recruitment process, with Fleming unanimously selected by the board’s panel to lead the next phase of England’s red-ball journey. The move marks the beginning of a new era for England, with one of the most respected coaches in world cricket joining forces with the country’s most prolific Test batter.
On his appointment, Fleming said: “I’m incredibly excited to be joining England as Test Coach. It’s one of the most prestigious coaching positions in world cricket, and I am honoured to be appointed.
“I am looking forward to working with the players and bedding in the gains made by Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes. Of course, the ambition is always to win now. But equally, it’s about ensuring the team is well-placed for the medium and long-term future. There is a lot of young talent in and around the team and our aim is to help them fulfil their potential as world-class cricketers.”
FLEMING COMES IN WITH IMPRESSIVE RESUME
Fleming, 53, arrives with one of the most decorated coaching resumes in world cricket. The former New Zealand captain spent 18 years with Chennai Super Kings, guiding the franchise to five Indian Premier League titles and 10 finals. He has also coached Southern Brave to the men’s Hundred final in 2023 and worked with CSK’s affiliate teams in South Africa and the United States, in addition to a stint with Melbourne Stars.
As a player, Fleming captained New Zealand in a record 80 Tests, leading his side to 28 victories during a distinguished international career spanning 111 matches. He also enjoyed success in county cricket, captaining Nottinghamshire to the 2005 County Championship title, ending the club’s long wait for the trophy.
ROOT SET FOR ANOTHER STINT AS CAPTAIN
Root, meanwhile, will begin his second stint as England’s Test captain after previously leading the side between 2017 and 2022. During his first spell, he captained England in 64 Tests, winning a national-record 27 matches before stepping down following a difficult run of results. Despite challenging away tours in Australia and the Caribbean, Root established himself as one of England’s most successful leaders in the longest format.
Speaking after his appointment, Root said: “It is a great honour and privilege to be asked to be England Men’s Test captain again. The Test captaincy is a difficult but hugely rewarding job and, after enjoying a brief taste of it again working with [Brendon] McCullum last month, I am excited to lead this next generation of players forward.
“The opportunity to do that alongside Stephen is also a huge motivator. He has proved over a long period of time that he is an exceptional leader with a great knowledge of the game, and I am looking forward to working with him and helping to build a winning environment.”
The 35-year-old has continued to enhance his reputation since stepping down as captain, surpassing Sir Alastair Cook to become England’s highest Test run-scorer while moving into the top five on the all-time list of Test run-makers. He also impressed during a recent spell as interim captain against New Zealand, reinforcing the ECB’s belief that he is the right person to guide England through this transitional phase.
With Fleming’s proven coaching pedigree and Root’s wealth of leadership experience, England will hope the new partnership can build on the foundations laid in recent years while steering the Test side towards sustained success at home and overseas.
