Unrest in several states after Friday prayers, 40 cops among injured | India News – Times of India
Members of the minority community came out on the streets soon after the afternoon namaz. While the demonstrations were largely peaceful in Gujarat, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Bihar, Maharashtra and Telangana, several persons, including nearly 40 cops, were injured in the violence that erupted in Uttar Pradesh, Bengal and Jharkhand.

In Bengal, at least 12 cops were injured as protests turned violent in Howrah, prompting authorities to shut down Internet services in the district till 6am on Monday. Protesters fought pitched battle with cops on NH-6, damaged police vehicles and resorted to arson. A group of protesters attacked the Domjur police station with brickbats. For the second consecutive day, demonstrators brought traffic to a standtill at several places by blocking roads and railway tracks, causing inconvenience to commuters.
Protests in Kolkata were peaceful but led to large-scale traffic disruptions in Park Circus and Kidderpore areas. Protests were also reported from across the state, but there was no other report of violence.
In Uttar Pradesh, protests turned violent in Prayagraj and Moradabad where crowds went out of control. Over a hundred persons were arrested for breach of peace in Saharanpur, Prayagraj, Hathras, Ambedkarnagar, Moradabad and Firozabad. In Prayagraj, police had to use force against some stone-pelters to quell the violence in which at least 12 cops and one RAF personnel were injured. No untoward incident was reported from Kanpur which was rocked by violence that began after protests last Friday.
In Jharkhand, over a dozen cops were among those injured in violence that erupted during a scheduled protest called by traders in Ranchi. The demonstration suddenly turned violent with some protesters pelting stones at cops and resorting to arson. Several vehicles were damaged in the violence and a group of protesters even attacked shops near a place of worship. Police had to fire rubber bullets at some places to quell the protests. By the evening, the administration imposed prohibitory orders in Sujata Chowk and Albert Ekka Chowk, one of the busiest areas of the state capital.
In Bihar, large numbers of Muslims came out on the roads after offering ‘namaz’ in the mosques in Nawada, Biharsharif and Ara towns. Barring in Nawada, where some people threw stones, the protests were largely peaceful.
In the Old City area in Hyderabad, hundreds of people took to the streets after the Friday prayers. The protests started soon after the culmination of prayers at the iconic Mecca Masjid. Since a delegation including Iran’s foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian was present at the Mecca Masjid to offer prayers, the group waited for them to leave before hitting the streets.
In Madhya Pradesh, minority community members held peaceful protests in Vidisha and Chhindwara districts and submitted memorandums to the administration demanding action against Nupur Sharma.
In Ahmedabad, people started gathering in Dariapur and Mirzapur soon after the congregational prayers. Protesters were carrying placards proclaiming their love for the Prophet and demanding the arrest of Sharma under the UAPA.
In Karnataka’s Kalaburagi, hundreds of protesters gathered at Muslim Chowk and held a demonstration demanding action against Sharma.
In Delhi, the protesters massed outside the historic Jama Masjid after the Friday prayers, carrying placards and shouting slogans against Sharma and Jindal.
