China’s Wang Wafan pulled off a significant upset after beating World No.7 Caroline Garcia in Round 1 of the US Open 2023 women’s singles. The 29-year-old won the match 6-4, 6-1 and it took her an hour and 10 minutes to beat the Frenchwoman.

US Open Day 2 Updates

Garcia became the second top 10 player after Maria Sakkari to be knocked out of the ongoing championship. Interestingly, both players lost in straight sets. Garcia was let down big time by the fact that she made 34 unforced errors, 23 more than her opponent.

Although she hit 18 winners, they weren’t enough for her to secure victory. Garcia went down with a double fault and that summed up her struggles. Wafan is next set to lock horns with Katie Boulter in the second round.

VONDROUSOVA DOMINANT

Current Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova advanced to the second round after a dominant performance against Han Na-lae of South Korea. She won the match 6-3, 6-0 in an hour.

Although she was broken twice by her opponent, she returned the favour by converting seven out of 11 break points. Vondrousova hit 27 winners, 14 more than her Korean opponent. She was dominant on the first serve, winning 21 out of 29 points from them.

In the men’s singles, Cameron Norrie made his way through to the second round after beating Russia’s Alexander Alexandrovich Shevchenko 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 in an hour and 31 minutes. Norrie was stupendous with his first serves as he won 84 percent of points from them (41 out of 49).
