World No.3 Daniil Medvedev had a cheeky response to one of his fans for getting “pumped up” during matches. The 27-year-old made the remark after his third round win over Sebastian Baez on Sunday, September 3.
“There is one guy, I don’t know if he has a girlfriend or wife, but I don’t know how his girlfriend or wife is going to sleep, because I think he’s so pumped up that he’s going to, at the night, say vamos vamos vamos vamos just nonstop. So, yeah, I feel sorry for him,” Medvedev said.
During his match against Baez, he asked umpire Aurelie Tourte to ask the crowd to be silent between his first and second serves. This attracted a few boos for him as well. Later, Medvedev silenced the crowd by saving a break point and winning five of his final six games of the match against Baez.
Medvedev beat Baez 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) in two hours and 40 minutes and made his way through to the quarterfinal. Having already won the hard-court tournament at Flushing Meadows back in 2021, Medvedev will be looking to repeat the feat even this time around.
Medvedev is next set to lock horns with Alex de Minaur in his quarter-final match at the Louis Armstrong Stadium. De Minaur and Medvedev have face each other six times. While Medvedev won four times, de Minaur came up trumps.
In their last two meetings, it was de Minaur, who won the Canada Masters and Paris Masters.
