LUCKNOW: Sitapur police on Friday lodged an FIR against seer Mahant Bajrang Muni in connection with a viral video clip in which he purportedly made provocative comments and allegedly issued “rape threat” to Muslim women.
Superintendent of police, Sitapur, RP Singh said an FIR had been lodged against Bajrang Muni on charges of sexual harassment through words, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman, uttering words with deliberate intent to hurt the religious feelings of any person. “A probe has been ordered under a DySP rank officer,” Singh said.
“Bajrang Muni is the manager of Kamaal Sarai Sangath in Khairabad. He was transferred here about one-and-a-half years ago. He has made several controversial remarks in the past too,” another police officer said.
Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women (NCW) also took cognizance of the speech and sought the arrest of the accused. “NCW has taken a serious note of the incident and condemns the statement made by the accused. Chairperson Rekha Sharma has written to the UP DGP to immediately intervene and lodge an FIR against the accused. NCW has also sought the arrest of the accused at the earliest,” the NCW tweeted on Friday.
“The NCW has come across a Twitter post enclosing video of a priest Bajrang Muni threatening to kidnap and rape Muslim women while addressing a gathering in Sitapur district of Uttar Pradesh. It has been reported that police personnel were also present at the location; however, none of them stopped him from making such an outrageous statement against women,” a statement from the NCW says.
“NCW has also sought his arrest at the earliest. The Police should not be a mute spectator in such incidents and appropriate measures must be taken by them to curb people from using such outrageous language for women,” the statement added.
Rekha Sharma later told ANI, “Women are their target, whether it is Hindu threatening Muslims or Muslims threatening Hindus. Though we’re taking such complaints again and again and taking them up with the police, it seems cases aren’t decreasing”.
Action against the seer came almost a week after his hate speech went viral on social media. A police officer said that in the video, Bajrang Muni was heard threatening to rape Muslim women if a single Hindu woman was harassed.
In the video, Bajrang Muni is seen surrounded by a crowd cheering him. Policemen are also seen near the car of the accused. An officer privy to the investigation said that the speech was made on April 2 in Sitapur’s Khairabad town.
