With ghosts buried, India look to unleash fresh faces in 3rd T20I vs Zimbabwe

The ghosts of a miserable United Kingdom tour have finally been laid to rest. After enduring six consecutive defeats and back-to-back series losses against Ireland and England, Shreyas Iyer has guided India to successive victories over Zimbabwe to seal the three-match T20I series with a game to spare. The pressure surrounding the new captain has eased to some extent, and Sunday’s third T20I in Harare now presents India with an opportunity to look beyond immediate results and towards the future.

With the series already in the bag, Iyer hinted after Saturday’s comprehensive 90-run victory that India are likely to tweak the playing XI. “Unfortunately, one of our players (Prince) picked up an injury, so there could be a couple of changes,” the captain said after the match, all but confirming fresh faces could get an opportunity.

The timing could hardly be better. India have little left to prove in the series, while a chance to assess the strength of the squad ahead of a busy international calendar could prove invaluable. A whitewash would be the ideal finish, but equally important will be giving fringe players meaningful international exposure.

PRINCE YADAV’S INJURY

India’s plans have been influenced by Prince Yadav’s hamstring injury, sustained during his impressive spell in the second T20I. The right-arm pacer dismissed Ben Curran and Sikandar Raza before pulling up and leaving the field, creating an opening in the bowling attack.

One player who could finally get his chance is Prabhsimran Singh. The Punjab wicketkeeper-batter has travelled with the squad but is yet to make his international debut in any format. An explosive top-order batter known for his fearless strokeplay, Prabhsimran could be rewarded if India decide to rotate their batting unit.

Another name in contention is Suryansh Shedge. While the all-rounder has already represented India in One-Day Internationals, he is still awaiting his maiden T20I cap. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball makes him an attractive option in a dead rubber.

India could also recall left-arm pacer Ashok Sharma, who missed the second T20I after featuring in the series opener. With Prince’s availability in doubt, Ashok appears the most straightforward replacement if the team opts for a like-for-like change.

ZIMBABWE WHITEWASH ON CARDS

Although India have dominated the series, there is still a notable milestone up for grabs. The visitors have not whitewashed Zimbabwe in a bilateral T20I series since their 2-0 triumph during the 2010 tour. Completing a 3-0 sweep would underline the gulf between the two sides and cap an impressive turnaround after the disappointments in the UK.

The batting unit has looked increasingly settled as the series has progressed. Ishan Kishan’s fluent return to form, Tilak Varma’s consistency in the middle order and the fearless approach of teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi have provided India with plenty of positives. While Abhishek Sharma has struggled for runs, his three-wicket spell in the second T20I demonstrated the value he brings to the team.

For Zimbabwe, salvaging some pride will be the priority. Brian Bennett has once again shown why he is regarded as one of the country’s brightest young cricketers, but the hosts have lacked partnerships with both bat and ball against a disciplined Indian side.

For Iyer, though, Sunday’s contest is about far more than chasing another victory. The immediate burden of proving himself as captain has lifted after securing his maiden T20I series triumph. That freedom should allow both captain and coach to experiment without the weight of expectation, giving India’s next generation a chance to stake their claim.

HARARE PITCH AND WEATHER CONDITIONS

The pitch in Harare has been excellent for batting throughout the series. While Zimbabwe’s batters have struggled to make the most of the conditions, India have shown in both matches that there are plenty of runs on offer for those who settle in. Another high-scoring contest could be on the cards on Sunday, with the bowlers expected to face another stern test.

The weather is also set to cooperate, with no rain forecast in Harare on Sunday. Clear skies and pleasant temperatures of around 21-22 degrees Celsius should ensure ideal conditions for cricket.
