India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has shattered former India batter Virender Sehwag’s 16-year-old record for hitting the most Test sixes in a calendar year. Jaiswal scored his third Test half-century against England in the fourth Test of their five-match series at the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi.

Jaiswal smashed England spinner Shoaib Bashir for a six down over long-on to break Sehwag’s long-standing record. Incredibly, Jaiswal has surpassed Sehwag’s tally in just his fifth match in 2024, while the former opener took 14 matches and 27 innings to set this record.

He has now hit 23 sixes in Test cricket in 2024, overtaking Sehwag’s record of 22 sixes he hit in 2008, and Rishabh Pant’s tally in 2022.

INDIA BATTERS WITH MOST TEST SIXES IN A CALENDER YEAR

Yashasvi Jaiswal: 23* sixes in 2024

Virender Sehwag: 22 sixes in 2008

Rishabh Pant: 21 sixes in 2022

Rohit Sharma: 20 sixes in 2019

Mayank Agarwal: 18 sixes in 2019

Jaiswal is the leading run-scorer in the ongoing Test series between India and England, having scored two fifties and two double hundreds. He became just the third Indian after Virat Kohli and Vinod Kambli to smash successive double centuries for India.

Following his unbeaten double century in Jaiswal, the young opener jumped 14 places to move up to 15th place in the latest ICC Men’s Test rankings for batters. Having already scored over 600 runs in the Test series against England, Jaiswal will be aiming to emulate the legendary Sunil Gavaskar’s record of being the only Indian to score over 700 runs in a bilateral series.

India bowled out England for 353 runs in the morning session on Day 2. Joe Root scored an unbeaten 122 off 274 balls, while forming a 102-run stand with Ollie Robinson to help the visitors post a fighting total in their first innings.

England got off to a dream start in the second innings, with James Anderson dismissing India captain Rohit Sharma for just 2 runs on Day 2. Jaiswal then formed an 82-run stand with Shubman Gill to steer India out of trouble.

However, the visitors bounced back with Bashir playing a central role in Ranchi. The lanky spinner claimed the wickets of Gill, Rajat Patidar and Ravindra Jadeja to leave India reeling at 131 for 4 at Tea on Day 2.
