NEW DELHI: Five Army personnel were killed in a blast that was triggered by terrorists in a thickly vegetated area in Kandi forest of Jammu and Kashmir‘s Rajouri district on Friday, officials said. Two jawans were immediately killed in the explosion while three others succumbed to their injuries later.

* A statement from the Army’s Northern Command said its personnel have been conducting “relentless intelligence-based operations to flush out a group of terrorists involved in an ambush on an Army truck in the Tota Gali area of Bhata Dhurian in Jammu region last month”.

* “On specific information about the presence of terrorists in the Kandi Forest in the Rajouri Sector, a joint operation was launched on May 3. Around 7.30 am on Friday, a search team established contact with a group of terrorists well entrenched in a cave. The area is thickly vegetated with rocky and steep cliffs.
* The statement said additional teams from the vicinity have been directed to the site of the encounter and the injured personnel have been evacuated to Command Hospital at Udhampur.

* As per initial reports, a group of terrorists are trapped in the area, it said, adding, “There is a likelihood of casualties in the terrorist group and the operation is in progress.”

Jammu and Kashmir Police in a joint operation with Army (29RR) and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) (2nd Bn) killed two terrorists linked to proscribed terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in Baramulla, said an official release on Thursday.
“The terrorists have been identified as Shakir Majid Najar and Hanan Ahmad Seh, both residents of Shopian”, added the release.
According to the release, acting on a specific input regarding the presence of terrorists in the Wanigam Payeen and Kreeri area of Baramulla, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by Police, Army (29RR) and SSB (2nd Bn) in the area.
Police arrests LeT terrorist in joint op in Shopian
Jammu and Kashmir Police on Tuesday in a joint operation with security forces arrested a terrorist associate linked to proscribed terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in Shopian.
The police recovered incriminating materials, arms and ammunition from the possession of Tanveer Ahmad Wani, son of Bashir Ahmad Wani, a resident of Daramdora, Shopian.
“Based on specific input regarding the presence of terrorists in Daramdora Keegam Shopian, a joint team of police alongwith Army (44RR) and CRPF (14Bn) launched a Cordon and Search Operation in the said area. During the search, one terrorist associate linked with proscribed terror outfit LeT was arrested,” an official of J-K Police said.
Anti-terror measures are need of the hour: Jaishankar at SCO meet
Stating that terrorism is a major threat, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Friday said that anti-terror measures are the need of the hour.
Speaking at the Shanghai Organisation Corporation (SCO) Foreign Ministers meeting in Goa, Jaishankar said that the channels of finances for terrorist activities must be seized and blocked to curb all these activities.
On the second day of the SCO Foreign Ministers’ meeting, he welcomed all his counterparts, who are members of the SCO.
He said that combating terrorism is one of the original mandates of the SCO, and as this menace continues there is a need to take measures to stop terrorism.
Jaishankar also said that there can be no justification for terrorism and it must be stopped in all its forms.
