assam: As Gujarat MLA Mevani gets bail, Assam CM says lady officer wants to challenge order | India News – Times of India
GUWAHATI: As Gujarat legislator Jignesh Mevani returned home after securing bail in an assault case filed by a woman sub-inspector of the state police, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the lady officer wants to challenge the bail order in the high court.
“The district judge has given a judgment. The woman police officer who complained of the assault on her has now sought my permission to go to the high court against the Barpeta district judge’s order. The file has come. If I give my approval, she can go to the high court,” Sarma told reporters after attending the joint meeting of CMs and chief justices of high courts in New Delhi on Saturday.
Barpeta district judge Aparesh Chakravarty, in his order granting Mevani bail on Friday, said the FIR accusing the legislator of assaulting and trying to outrage the modesty of a woman police sub-inspector in the presence of two male police officials inside a moving vehicle was “false”.
Mevani walked free nine days after he was arrested from his home state by the Assam police for his tweet against PM Narendra Modi.
“The government wanted to crush my spirit and confidence but these arrests have made no difference to me. Any number of FIRs can be filed against me but I will not move an inch from my stand,” Mevani said before flying out. He added, “My bail order on its own is jurisprudence.”
