CHENNAI: Chennai will be hosting the upcoming 44th World Chess Olympiad which is scheduled to be held later this year. India bid for the event last month after it was shifted from Moscow. With Russia invading Ukraine, FIDE — the game’s governing body — took the decision to not host the Olympiad in Moscow.
“It is confirmed that Chennai will be playing host to the event,” Bharat Singh Chauhan, AICF secretary told TOI on Tuesday night. Chauhan made it clear that the exact dates of the tournament will be announced by Friday.
“We are working on the dates and an official announcement of the same will be made by Friday,” Chauhan stated. In an earlier chat, Chauhan had mentioned that India had the financial backing and all necessary help to stage an event of this magnitude. “We have sponsors who are ready to invest and have support from various other institutions for the successful conduct of the tournament,” he mentioned.
This will be the second big-ticket event to be hosted by Chennai after the 2013 World championship clash featuring Viswanathan Anand and Magnus Carlsen.
Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin welcomed the decision via a tweet on his official Twitter handle. “Delighted that the Chess Capital of India is set to host the 44th Chess Olympiad! A proud moment for Tamil Nadu! Chennai warmly welcomes all the Kings and Queens from around the world!,” he tweeted.
The tournament will witness players from over 150 countries from across the world.
