NEW DELHI: A schoolgirl was stabbed by an alleged stalker in west Delhi’s Tilak Nagar area on Thursday morning. The Class XII student was on her way to school on her scooter when a 22-year-old youth, who lives in the girl’s neighbourhood, intercepted her and after a brief argument, stabbed her several times.
The man has been arrested while the girl is in hospital in a critical state.
The police claimed that the man, Shivam Mathur, and the 17-year-old girl were friends though the latter’s family had told police verbally about their concerns about the boy constantly following their daughter around. Mathur had then given the family and police a written undertaking that he would not bother the girl anymore.
Informed around 7.50am on Thursday by a hospital that they had admitted a stab victim, police found the schoolgirl was attacked in Santgarh in Tilak Nagar while on her way to school on her scooter. The teenager had left home around 7am to pick up her cousin who also lives close by and studies in the same school. Wondering why she hadn’t arrived, the cousin saw a crowd on the road.
Reaching the spot, she found the girl lying with bloody stab wounds in her stomach, eyes and other parts of the body. The people rushed the teenager to hospital, which referred her to a private centre where she was operated upon.
The girl’s mother told TOI, “My daughter’s kidney has been damaged. We told police in May that this Shivam Mathur was troubling our daughter, but they took it lightly. On the cops insistence on a compromise, the boy gave an undertaking not to stalk our daughter, but later said he would kill her and himself commit suicide. We went back to the police station, but the cops again said nothing would happen.”
The mother wants the accused to be hanged for his crime. “If he is not hanged, then I will hang myself,” the distraught woman said. “We wish to save girls from such men, but police don’t act in time to prevent crimes.”
Ghanshyam Bansal, DCP (West), said the girl and Mathur were friends for some years. “After verbally complaining to police in May, their families decided to settle the matter and we asked the youth to give his word that he wouldn’t trouble her,” said Bansal. “We have arrested Mathur. The girl has been operated upon and is under observation.”
A case of attempt to murder has been registered against Mathur. Local residents and neighbours of the girl’s family told TOI that Mathur used to follow the girl around and engaged her in conversation.
Kamaljeet Singh, a close associate of the family, claimed, “That youth used to study in the same tuition where the girl also attended classes. Like every child who talks to peers at tuition classes, she too spoke to the man, but he had different ideas and started stalking her. He often tried to force her into a conversation with him. On the other hands, the Class XII student was more focused on her studies and was a role model for other girls in the locality.”
On the other hand, the accused’s family stated that they had time and again told him not to engage in such activities and stay away but he did not listen to them.
