NEW DELHI: Delhi Police on Tuesday detained leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi along with other Congress MPs from Akashvani Bhavan after a day long protest demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.This comes after the INDIA bloc leaders staged a protest near the Election Commission headquarters, demanding a meeting with the election commissioners to raise their allegations of “vote chori” and question Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.After a nine-hour sit-in protest, Delhi Police swooped in at the protest site and removed Congress MPs Pawan Khera, KC Venugopal and Amrinder Singh Raja Warring.According to news agency ANI, New Delhi deputy commissioner of police Sachin Sharma was present at the Akashvani Bhawan.Tuesday’s protest against CEC Kumar Kumar saw Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra detained twice as opposition MPs sought to meet the Election Commission over their allegations of “vote chori”.

Rahul and Priyanka were detained around noon and made to board a police bus before being released. “The Election Commission office is barely 50 metres away, but we were not allowed to go there. I do not understand what the problem is. The Election Commission’s job is to conduct elections properly. At least 300 MPs want to meet Gyanesh Kumar. But he is scared. I don’t know what’s happening in the country,” he told reporters.“If the representatives of the people cannot meet the Election Commission, then what is the meaning of democracy?” he said.The opposition MPs had begun their march from the Parliament complex around 11 am, heading towards Nirvachan Sadan, the Election Commission’s headquarters.The march was eventually stopped by police, following which the MPs began a sit-in near Akashvani BhavanThe protest is part of a broader opposition campaign against Gyanesh Kumar and the Election Commission.
