They were surprise finalists in Russia 2018 and Luka Modric and his band of merry Croatians have left everyone stunned in Qatar as well, this time in the quarter-finals.
In what was the biggest upset of this tournament, Croatia knocked five time champions and massive pre-tournament favourites Brazil out of the World Cup after winning their quarter-final clash 4-2 on penalties.
Brazil were well and truly on their way to a comfortable semi-final spot after Neymar scored a scintillating goal in the first half of extra time in the 106th minute to put Brazil up 1-0. With this he also equalled Pele’s all-time goal scoring record for Brazil of 77.
But just about 10 minutes later, Petkovic made it 1-1 with what was incredibly Croatia’s first shot on target. And the match went into penalties.
Ultimately there was heartbreak for Brazil, with Croatia winning 4-2 on penalties. The Samba boys’ wait for a World Cup title continues. The last time they won the World Cup trophy was way back in 2002. Brazil in fact were the last South American team to win the World Cup.
What is incredible is that the quarter-finals seem to be the bogey round for the most successful team in the history of the competition. In the last five editions, Brazil have fallen at the quarter-final stage four times.
Here’s a quick look back at Brazil’s results in the last five editions of the FIFA World Cup, including the ongoing one in Qatar:
2022: Lost to Croatia in Quarter-Finals 2-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw
2018: Lost to Belgium in Quarter Finals 1-2 in regulation time
2014: Finished fourth
2010: Lost to Netherlands in Quarter Finals 1-2 in regulation time
2006: Lost to France in Quarter Finals 0-1 in regulation time
Overall, since their first World Cup appearance in 1930, Brazil have gone out at the quarter final stage six times. The Selecao fell at the quarter final round in these editions – 1956, 1986, 2006, 2010, 2018 and 2022.
