15-year-old superstar Vaibhav Sooryavanshi suffered an injury scare in Rajasthan Royals’ home game against SunRisers Hyderabad on Saturday, April 25. Fielding in the fourth over of the second innings, Vaibhav felt some discomfort in his right thigh. He fell to the ground almost immediately and had to be carried off the ground by the Royals’ support staff.

Vaibhav looked in a considerable amount of pain as he limped off the field, with both of his hands around the shoulders of the staff. Initially, it looked like Vaibhav might have pulled his hamstring while running after a cover drive, but it later appeared that the opener might have suffered severe cramps instead.

It would not come as a surprise if Vaibhav suffered cramps because he had batted for 14 overs in the Jaipur heat on Saturday. Vaibhav had stayed at the crease for a total of 37 balls and hit his second Indian Premier League hundred.

Vaibhav completed the feat in just 36 balls, in turn registering the third-fastest hundred in the history of the Indian Premier League. The northern parts of India are going through a severe heatwave at the moment, which has forced players into painful cramps in the Indian Premier League.

It looked on Saturday that Vaibhav’s young muscles were not immune to cramps either, as the player was not able to continue on the field after four overs in the second half of the innings.

WHY DO PLAYERS CRAMP IN HEAT?

Players often cramp while playing in extreme heat because prolonged high-intensity activity leads to rapid fluid loss, electrolyte imbalance, and muscle fatigue. In conditions like 41 degrees Celsius in Jaipur, the body sweats heavily to regulate temperature, causing a significant loss of sodium, potassium, and other essential minerals that help muscles function properly.

As fatigue sets in, blood circulation to the muscles becomes less efficient, and the repeated explosive movements of batting, running, and fielding increase stress on the muscle fibres. This also leads to the build-up of metabolic by-products such as lactic acid, especially when the body is pushed beyond its usual recovery capacity. The combination of dehydration, electrolyte depletion, muscle overload, and lactic acid accumulation can cause sudden involuntary muscle contractions, which is what results in cramping during a match.
