IPL 2026: Mitchell Starc joins Delhi Capitals but misses Punjab Kings clash
Mitchell Starc has finally arrived in the Delhi Capitals camp, nearly a month into IPL 2026, with the franchise even sharing a video of the Australian quick linking up with the squad on their social media handles. The much-anticipated arrival, however, did not translate into immediate selection for their clash against Punjab Kings on Saturday.
Starc was seen actively involved with the squad ahead of the game at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, going through bowling and fielding drills with his teammates just before toss time. The signs were encouraging, but Delhi opted to hold him back rather than rush him straight into match action.
At the toss, DC captain Axar Patel chose to bat first, pointing out that the surface looked dry and could assist bowlers more in the second innings. It was a call made keeping conditions in mind, but also one that underlined Delhi’s confidence in managing without Starc for another game.
For now, Starc’s return remains a work in progress. He is back with the group, but not yet ready to take the field.
WHY DID STARC MISS DC vs PBKS?
Starc’s delayed entry into IPL 2026 was due to shoulder and elbow issues that kept him out since the Australian summer. Cricket Australia monitored his recovery closely before giving him clearance to join the tournament earlier this week.
Even after arriving in India, Starc is still building up his workload. The Delhi Capitals management is keen to give him time to settle into conditions and regain match rhythm before bringing him into the playing XI. As things stand, he is expected to be available for their upcoming clash against Rajasthan Royals on May 1.
In his absence, Delhi’s pace attack has held steady. Lungi Ngidi has led the line with seven wickets in six games, while Mukesh Kumar and T Natarajan have provided solid support.
That balance has allowed Delhi to be patient with Starc’s return. Rather than rushing him back, they are focusing on getting him fully ready for the second half of the season.
Starc’s impact last year still lingers. Signed for Rs 11.75 crore, he picked up 14 wickets in 11 matches and brought pace and bite to the attack. That is the edge Delhi will be hoping to add once he is match-ready.
