Mumbai will witness heavy rains on Friday and Saturday, predicts the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The IMD has issued an orange alert indicating that heavy rains are likely in isolated places in Mumbai and adjoining coastal districts in Maharashtra. An orange alert implies that authorities should be prepared to handle any situation arising out of severe weather conditions.

Senior IMD director Shubhangi Bhute said Ratnagiri district, which bore the brunt of cyclonic storm Nisarga on June 5, is likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places on Friday. Raigad, another district affected by the cyclone, will receive a similar downpour on Saturday.

The Mumbai Police also have warned people to stay indoors in view of IMD’s prediction. “All citizens are advised to remain indoors, not venture out unnecessarily and take necessary precautions,” Mumbai Police said in a tweet.

A note by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) says that Mumbai has received 20 per cent of its annual rainfall till July 2. The city’s seven water storage facilities have 1,14,440 lakh litres of water at present which is 20 per cent lesser than that of the stock in 2019.
