Happy International Women’s Day 2022, everyone! There is no better way to honour the glorious day than to celebrate the women and their achievements in various fields. It’s 2022 and equality still seems a far cry. However, there are significant figures who paved the way for many women across India to follow their dreams, especially in the field of sports. Things are never easy for female athletes in our country. They see, every day, how men doing the same things are celebrated and paid more. Yet, nothing stopped their spirit. MC Mary Kom punched the stereotypes and the results are there for everyone to witness! She is the only boxer to win eight World Championships medals, the only woman to win the World Amateur Boxing Championship six times and the only female boxer to have won a medal in each one of the first seven World Championships. Nicknamed ‘Magnificient Mary,’ she made her maiden appearance at the 2012 London Olympics, where she bagged the first bronze medal from India ever in women’s boxing.

Mithali Raj is the current Test and ODI captain of India women’s national cricket team. She recently achieved an incredible feat in their Women’s World Cup opener against Pakistan. Equalling the record, previously held by Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar, Mithali became the first women’s cricketer to feature in six different Women’s World Cup tournaments.

Sania Mirza changed the scene for Indian tennis and how! From turning professional at the age of 16, Sania went on to become a sporting icon in the country. She is the first Indian woman to win six Grand Slam championships, the first Indian woman and third player from the country to break into the Top 30 in singles and two-times Asian Games Gold medallist, among many other achievements.
