NEW DELHI: Even as several opposition parties boycotted the inauguration of the new Parliament by PM Modi over the exclusion of the President from the event, President Droupadi Murmu underlined in her message read out at the ceremony that the PM, as the popular representative of the people of India, was the appropriate choice to helm the opening ceremony.
Murmu’s statement was read out by Rajya Sabha deputy chairman Harivansh. “The Constitution makers envisaged a nation that would be run by democratically-elected representatives of the people of India… I am deeply satisfied the symbol of this faith in Parliament – the prime minister of India – is inaugurating this Parliament,” the President said. She added that she was confident the new Parliament will “strengthen the spirit of unity and pride in the nation”.
Describing the inauguration as a “matter of immense pride and joy for the people of India”, Murmu’s statement, read out by Rajya Sabha deputy chairman Harivansh, undercut the opposition’s allegations of “deliberate exclusion”.
