NEW DELHI: Months before polls for the President and Vice President, murmurs within the opposition camp suggest that a contest is certain, unless the ruling NDA comes up with a surprise candidature that puts the opposition parties in a fix.
Though currently short of the numbers it needs to win a majority, NDA has a clear advantage and is expected to comfortably bridge the number gap with support from BJD and YSR (C), the two friendly parties that also voted in favour of President Ram Nath Kovind in 2017.
The numbers notwithstanding, elections will still be politically significant, especially because they give the anti-BJP bloc an opportunity to work together and put their elusive ‘opposition unity’ to test ahead of the 2024 general elections.
Oopposition leaders indicated that an electorally chastened Congress may have to contend with ceding space to likeminded parties in order to arrive at a common opposition candidate.
