Govt releases truncated April WPI inflation data; reports 10.12% deflation in fuel, power basket | Economy News

0

[ad_1]

New Delhi: The government on Thursday released truncated data for April wholesale price-based inflation saying there was limited transaction of products in the market due to the outbreak of COVID-19.

As per the data released by the Commerce and Industry Ministry, wholesale price index (WPI) deflation in primary articles was 0.79 per cent in April, as against an inflation of 3.72 per cent in March.

The fuel and power basket saw a deflation of 10.12 per cent in April, against 1.76 per cent deflation in the previous month.

“In view of the limited transactions of products in the wholesale market in April 2020 due to the spread of COVID-19, it has been decided to release the price movement of selected sub-groups/groups of WPI, following the principles of adequacy,? an official statement said.

All commodities WPI could not be computed for April-2020 due to non- availability of manufactured product group index, it added.

It said the price indices of primary articles have been computed based on mandi prices of agricultural items; ex-mine prices of minerals; prices of crude petroleum and natural gas.

Price indices of fuel and power major group have been computed based on the price data reported from Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, selected public sector undertakings (PSUs), Office of the Coal Controller and Central Electricity Authority.

Price indices of these major groups (primary articles and fuel & power) were released for April 2020 with standard procedures. No changes in estimation procedures were done, it added.

With regard to inflation in manufactured products, the ministry said in view of the preventive measures and announcement of nationwide lockdown by the government to contain spread of COVID-19, the price collection of manufactured products through personal visits of price collectors was suspended with effect from March 19.

The data (ex-factory prices) was collected through electronic means of communications from selected factories and institutional sources. The price movement of these sub-groups/groups of WPI was worked out by taking the prices of only those items for which at least 25 per cent of price quotations were reported from the selected manufacturing units.

Indices were compiled only for five manufacturing groups – manufacture of food products, beverages, chemicals and chemical products, pharmaceuticals, medicinal chemical and botanical products, and basic metals.

Prices of manufacture of food products (-0.29 per cent), pharmaceuticals, medicinal chemical and botanical products (-0.15 per cent) and basic metals (-0.84 per cent) provisionally declined, whereas prices of chemicals and chemical products (0.86 per cent) and beverages (0.24 per cent) provisionally increased in April compared to the previous month, it added.

The ministry said food index consisting of ?food articles’ from primary articles group and ‘food products’ from manufactured products group have provisionally increased from 146.1 in March 2020 to 146.6 in April 2020.

The rate of inflation based on WPI Food Index decreased from 5.49 per cent in March, 2020 to 3.60 per cent in April, 2020.

In March wholesale price inflation eased to a four-month low of an official statement said one per cent, from 2.26 per cent in February, on sharp fall in prices of food and fuel items as demand slowed.

Earlier this week, the National Statistical Office (NSO) also deferred the release of retail or consumer price index based inflation for April saying that the nationwide lockdown prevented officials from collecting price data at various centres.

The data collected telephonically showed increased in prices of commodities like milk products, fruits and vegetables.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) takes into account retail inflation while formulating its monetary policy.

The RBI had last month said that its inflation outlook looks benign, with risks around inflation project being balanced. With softening of food prices, sharp fall in crude prices and normal monsoon, RBI expects inflation for current fiscal to be in the range of 3.6-3.8 per cent.

It said the impact of COVID-19 on inflation is ambiguous, with a possible decline in food prices likely to be offset by potential cost-push increases in prices of non-food items due to supply disruptions.

Analysis | What is ‘Obamagate,’ anyway? And how does it involve Michael Flynn?

0

[ad_1]

It seems Trump is keeping his allegation intentionally vague. “You know what the crime is,” he said Monday when asked by reporters what he meant and what specific crimes he was alleging. Pressed, Trump was unable to name any.

But we got some clues on Wednesday that it may be connected to two things close to Trump’s heart:

  1. Trump’s full-scale effort to undermine the Russia investigation that dominated nearly the first two years of his presidency and swept up many of his top aides, including former national security adviser Michael Flynn.
  2. Trump’s reelection efforts

Whatever it is, this Obamagate allegation seems to be ramping up this week with the help of some Senate Republicans, Trump’s conservative media allies and his top intelligence chief — and more and more, it seems to be geared at Trump’s presumptive 2020 opponent, Joe Biden.

On Wednesday, Senate Republicans released the names of Obama administration officials who may have asked intelligence officials to reveal the hidden names of Americans popping up in intelligence reports in December 2016 and January 2017. One of the people on the senators’ list was then-Vice President Biden.

An American unmasked in one of those intelligence reports was Flynn, who was observed talking to the Russian ambassador. At the time, Trump had won the presidency but hadn’t yet been inaugurated, but his incoming national security adviser was already talking with the Russian ambassador about sanctions levied on Russia by the Obama administration. (It was lies about those conversations that eventually got Flynn fired from his job shortly after Trump was inaugurated and eventually lead to a guilty plea that the Justice Department under William P. Barr is now arguing wasn’t actually a crime.)

Intelligence agencies routinely respond to such “unmasking”requests, which reveal the identities of U.S. individuals who are referred to documents to allow government officials to better understand what they are reading. Unmaskings are legal and agents say it’s a useful tool to uncover potential spies, according to The Post’s Shane Harris and Matt Zapotosky.

But sharing the names of who requested the unmasking is rare.

Republican senators publicized the names of those officials after Trump’s acting director of intelligence, Richard Grenell, declassified and gave the Justice Department their names. By disclosing these officials, the Senators are raising the specter of wrongdoing because members of the Obama administration, including and perhaps especially Biden, appear on the list. The not-so-quiet part that they leave unsaid: Did Biden somehow play a role in getting the FBI to investigate one of Trump’s allies?

There’s no evidence that’s the case.

Since his taking office, the president and his allies have accused the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and any possible ties to the Trump campaign as being a “hoax” and a political effort to undermine his presidency. Many continue to question the motives behind the investigation and the Obama administration’s role in it, especially Biden’s.

“It is, from my standpoint, pretty curious that the vice president of the United States would be requesting unmasking in this case of General Flynn eight days before he left office,” Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), the chair of the Homeland Security Committee and one of the senators who released the names, said Wednesday night on Fox News.

That question has galvanized the right, as Trump continues to get low marks from the public for his response to the coronavirus pandemic. Conservative blogger Erick Erickson, who has criticized Trump’s coronavirus response, joined in by alleging on his blog that “a lot of people close to the Obama Administration spent a year leaking information about Mike Flynn to the press.”

Biden’s campaign called this a diversion from the coronavirus situation and emphasize that he did nothing wrong in requesting the unmasking. “The documents simply indicate the breadth and depth of concern across the American government, including among career officials, over intelligence reports of Michael Flynn’s attempts to undermine ongoing American national security policy through discussions with Russian officials or other foreign representatives,” his campaign said in a statement.

“Importantly, none of these individuals could have known Flynn’s identity beforehand,” it added. “These documents have absolutely nothing to do with the — any FBI investigation, and they confirm that all normal procedures were followed. Any suggestion otherwise is flat-out a lie.”

Biden has said he knew there was an investigation related to Flynn, but that was it. The FBI investigation into Russian meddling-turned special counsel investigation-turned Mueller report was critical of Trump but declined to accuse him of obstruction of justice, citing Justice Department policy against indicting a sitting president. (Indeed, much of that happened after Biden was out of office.)

Flynn was a central figure in the investigation. After he pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI and getting fired from his job as national security adviser, he struck a cooperation agreement to help investigators looked into Russian meddling in the election and whether the Trump campaign helped.

Trump has always bristled at Flynn and his allies being caught up in the investigation, alleging it was politically motivated to undermine his presidency shortly after it got started.

As recently as a few weeks ago, he said he’s open to pardoning Flynn. Though thanks to his Justice Department, he may not have to. Last week, the Justice Department under Attorney General William P. Barr moved to drop the case against Flynn, saying that essentially the FBI shouldn’t have been investigating Flynn in the first place and thus his lies weren’t material to a legitimate investigation. (A federal judge has put that on hold while he waits to hear from legal experts and a former judge who think Flynn should get sentenced.)

If Trump were trying to drum up another Ukraine-like scandal against Biden, this would be how it gets started. But just like with Biden’s work in Ukraine, when it comes to unmasking Flynn, there’s very little evidence that Biden did anything untoward, much less illegal.

Bundesliga to use five substitutions, relegation confirmed

0

[ad_1]

Bundesliga teams will be allowed up to five substitutions per match when it restarts on Saturday after the coronavirus stoppage, while teams will be relegated provided the season is completed, the German Football League (DFL) said on Thursday.

Short-term venue changes will also be permitted if health reasons dictate such a need and the season will continue beyond its re-scheduled finish date of June 30 and into July if necessary, the DFL said following a general assembly.

The Bundesliga will be the first major European league to resume when it gets going following a two-month break due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The second tier 2. Bundesliga will also get under way.

All matches will be played behind closed doors, and progress will be closely watched around Europe.

Doubts have already surfaced after second tier Dynamo Dresden’s entire squad were quarantined by the local health authority following two positive tests, forcing their first two games to be postponed.

However, when three players at Cologne tested positive, only the players affected were isolated. Under German law, the final decision in such cases lies with local health authorities.

Soccer’s rule-making body IFAB ruled earlier this month that teams could make five substitutions instead of the usual three as a temporary measure but said the final decision lay with competition organisers.

The DFL became the first major league to implement the change which is designed to help teams cope with fixture congestion as they rush to complete the season.

The DFL said that all but one of its 36 member clubs voted in favour of maintaining relegation.

“(The assembly) unanimously confirmed, with one abstention, the intention to carry out the current 2019/20 season in its entirety, including relegation, as far as legally possible and, if necessary, to continue beyond 30 June in July,” it said.

No decision was taken on what would happen if the season had to be called off for health reasons.

“In the event that… the season has to be abandoned prematurely, a regulation regarding the sporting classification is to be developed within the following two weeks,” it said.

Venues could be changed should a local outbreak make it inadvisable to stage a match. “There will be the possibility of a match being played in another stadium at short notice for overriding compelling legal, organisational and/or security reasons,” the DFL said. Bayern Munich, chasing an eighth successive title, currently lead the table with 55 points from 25 games, four ahead of Borussia Dortmund with RB Leipzig third on 50. There are nine rounds of matches to play. At the bottom, Werder Bremen and Paderborn are in the drop zone with Fortuna Duesseldorf in 16th, which is the relegation/promotion playoff spot.

“Then, he was diagnosed with the rare illness, and Vishal Bhardwaj decided that he wanted to make the film only with him. So, he put the project on hold. I was looking forward to working with him but unfortunately, it didn’t happen. I was positive that as soon as things would be fine, he would return and the project would be revived,” he added.

0

[ad_1]

Samsung Galaxy A51 (4G) was the world’s highest-selling Android smartphone in the first quarter of the calendar year 2020, research firm Strategy Analytics claims. Samsung is said to have shipped more than 60 lakh units of the smartphone globally. Redmi 8 came second among the top selling Android phones. The top six smartphones in the list include four devices from Samsung and two from Xiaomi.

According to the report, Samsung Galaxy A51 (4G) captured 2.3 percent share of the overall smartphone market. Redmi 8 was the second best-selling Android smartphone, accounting for 1.9 percent of the market share. On the third position was Samsung again with its Galaxy S20+ phone with 1.7 percent share. On fourth and fifth positions were Samsung Galaxy A10s and Redmi Note 8 with 1.6 percent market share each.

The report says that mobile phone customers are becoming more price-sensitive and in the post-coronavirus era, they will be looking for such Android smartphones that provide value for money and that “Android is entering a post-premium era”.

“As mobile operators have reduced subsidies in recent years, and many countries are now tumbling into post-virus recession, smartphone consumers globally are becoming increasingly price-sensitive and they are seeking out new Android models that deliver the biggest bang for their buck, said Juha Winter, Associate Director at Strategy Analytics in a statement.

Samsung Galaxy A51 is available in India at Rs. 25,250 for its lone 6GB + 128GB onboard storage variant. It comes in three colour options, Prism Crush Black, Prism Crush Blue, and Prism Crush White. Galaxy A51 packs a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED full-HD+ (1,080×2,400 pixels) display. The phone runs One UI 2.0 on top of Android 10 and is powered by an octa-core Exynos 9611 SoC.

Sen. Lindsey Graham rejects Trump’s call to summon Obama to testify on alleged ‘Obamagate’ conspiracy

0

[ad_1]

“If I were a Senator or Congressman, the first person I would call to testify about the biggest political crime and scandal in the history of the USA, by FAR, is former President Obama. He knew EVERYTHING,” Trump said in a tweet in which he urged Graham to “just do it.”

“No more Mr. Nice Guy. No more talk!” the president wrote.

Trump has called the alleged scandal “worse than Watergate” and has kept up a drumbeat of accusations that Obama committed a crime, though he declined to offer specifics when asked to explain the extraordinary charges during a Rose Garden news conference Monday.

Asked about Trump’s latest tweet on the issue, Graham told Politico that he has no intention of summoning Obama to Capitol Hill.

“I don’t think now’s the time for me to do that. I don’t know if that’s even possible,” Graham said, adding: “I understand President Trump’s frustration, but be careful what you wish for.”

In a subsequent tweet, Graham wrote that both Trump and Obama are “welcome to come before the committee and share their concerns about each other.”

“If nothing else it would make for great TV. However, I have great doubts about whether it would be wise for the country,” the senator added.

The Justice Department said in a published opinion last year that former presidents cannot be compelled to testify before Congress.

Trump has ramped up his accusations in the wake of the Justice Department’s decision to drop its prosecution of former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Former Obama aides have been dismissive of Trump’s efforts.

“No one knows what ‘Obamagate’ is, and that includes President Trump. It’s a hashtag in search of a scandal,” said Ned Price, a former CIA analyst who served as a National Security Council spokesman under Obama. “The only people it will galvanize are those already 1,000 percent behind” Trump.

David Nakamura contributed to this report.

Analysis | 5 takeaways from coronavirus whistleblower Rick Bright’s testimony

0

[ad_1]

Here are some takeaways from Bright’s testimony.

1. ‘Lives were lost’ because of ‘inaction,’ unheeded warnings

Bright said that early inaction by the government — particularly in the Department of Health and Human Services — had, in fact, cost lives.

“That inaction has put a lot of lives at risk in our front-line health-care workers” Bright said.

Bright has said that he pushed for ramping up production of medical equipment such as masks, but that it went unheeded for months after he was informed that officials didn’t think there was a “critical shortage” of masks.

“I pushed that forward to the highest levels I could in HHS and got no response,” Bright said. “From that moment, I knew that we were going to have a crisis for our health-care workers because we were not taking action. We were already behind the ball. That was our last window of opportunity to turn on that production to save the lives of those health-care workers, and we didn’t act.”

Bright added that even today, the country is dealing with the consequences of that early negligence and that health-care workers are still more at risk than they should be.

“Lives were endangered, and I believe lives were lost,” Bright said. “And not only that: We were forced to procure these supplies from other countries without the right quality standards. So even our doctors and nurses in the hospitals today are wearing N95-marked masks from other countries that are not providing the sufficient protection that a U.S.-standard N95 mask would provide them. Some of those masks are only 30 percent effective. Therefore, nurses are rushing in the hospitals thinking they’re protected, and they’re not.”

2. Administration pushed vastly expanded use of unproven drugs

One of Bright’s key claims is that he was moved to another post after raising objections to the administration pushing the use of the malaria drugs chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine to treat coronavirus.

The administration allowed for the emergency use of the drugs to treat the virus, though later studies — which have yet to be peer-reviewed and were not randomized — suggest that the use of the drugs don’t help and can, in fact, have negative consequences. The FDA has now warned about the dangers of using the drugs.

“My concerns were escalated when I learned that leadership in the Department of Health and Human Services were pushing to make that drug available outside of this emergency use authorization, to flood New York and New Jersey with this drug,” Bright said.

Bright has cited his skepticism of the drugs for his removal from his post and said the administration wanted to make it easier for people to use them without extensive medical supervision — even people who might not even have the virus.

“I believe part of the removal process for me was initiated because of a pushback that I gave when they asked me to put in place an expanded access protocol that would make chloroquine more freely available to Americans that were not under the close supervision of a physician and may not even be confirmed to be infected with the coronavirus,” Bright said.

3. Pessimism about 12- to 18-month timeline for vaccine

President Trump has been effusively optimistic about not just treatments such as the chloroquines but about the timeline for a vaccine for the virus.

Shortly before Bright’s testimony Thursday, Trump even said, “I think we’re going to have a vaccine by the end of the year.”

That’s even more optimistic than the 12- to 18-month timeline that medical experts such as Anthony S. Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, have said is realistic for the vaccine. But Bright said that even a year to year-and-a-half timeline might also be overly optimistic.

“I still think 12 to 18 months is an aggressive schedule, and I think it’s going to take longer than that to do so,” Bright said.

4. We don’t have ‘a single point of leadership’ or ‘master plan’

As Trump increasingly criticized Fauci, Bright said the government needs to have more regard for it scientists — and a more consistent message from the top.

He said that right now the response has been hampered by not having a “single point of leadership.”

“We need to install and empower leadership, and we need to unleash the voices of the scientists in our public health system in the United States so they can be heard and their guidances need to be listened to,” Bright said. “And we need to be able to convey that information to the American public so they have the truth about the real risk and dire consequences of this virus.

He added: “And we don’t have a single point of leadership right now for this response, and we don’t have a master plan for this response. So those two things are absolutely critical.”

Fauci has said in recent days that states that move forward with reopening their economies before meeting the guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are risking new outbreaks – which could set back the entire response.

5. Azar, Republicans cast Bright as a malcontent skipping work

As Bright offered one of the most significant rebukes of the federal coronavirus response to date, Republicans on the committee and members of the Trump administration sought to undercut his testimony and character. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar, in particular, had strong words for Bright.

“Everything he is complaining about was achieved,” Azar said while standing next to Trump on the White House lawn. “Everything he talked about was done. He says he talked about the need for respirators; we procured respirators under the president’s direction.”

Azar echoed Republicans in the hearing who questioned why Bright has been absent from his new posting — a narrower one focused on testing and vaccines at the National Institutes of Health — in recent weeks.

“While we’re launching Operation Warp Speed,” Azar said, “he’s not showing up for work to be part of that.”

Bright said that he has been on leave while dealing with “very high blood pressure” — owing in part to the stress from recent events.

“I had a conversation with my physician about my hypertension and how we’ve been managing it over the last three weeks because this has been very stressful to be removed suddenly without explanation from my role and position as a life change for me,” Bright said.

ICC trolls Shoaib Akhtar for his ‘four deliveries’ tweet on Steve Smith | Cricket News

0

[ad_1]

Former Pakistan pace spearhead Shoaib Akhtar has accused the ICC of “throwing neutrality out of window” after being trolled by the world cricket governing body for claiming that he can even now dismiss Australian batting star Steve Smith in four balls.

The ICC trolled Akhtar using a series of images featuring basketball star Michael Jordan after the Pakistani superstar claimed that he can get Smith out on the fourth delivery after three “hurting” bouncers.

In the first picture posted by ICC, Jordan can be seen looking down at something. In the second image, it is revealed as Akhtar’s tweet, and third one shows Jordan as laughing.

The 44-year-old Akhtar hit back at the ICC saying he was not amused by the response of the apex body.

“A symbolic tweet, how ICC has thrown neutrality out of the window. Basically this is how the state of affairs are run there,” Akhtar tweeted.

Akhtar also posted an old video of himself and captioned it: “Dear @icc, find a new meme or Emoji. Sorry i couldn’t find any, only found some real videos.”

Earlier, Akhtar had taken to social media to respond to a a poll conducted by ESPNCricinfo that pitted some of the best bowlers and batsmen from the modern-day and previous era.

Responding to the post in which Akhtar was pitted  against Smith, the Pakistani said, “Even today, 3 hurting bouncers and i can dismiss @stevesmith49 on the 4th ball. Lol.”

NEW DELHI: Indian fugitive and former liquor baron Vijay Mallya on Thursday lost his appeal in the UK Supreme Court against his extradition to India, clearing a major roadblock for the Narendra Modi government to bring him back in the next 28 days.

The former parliamentarian, who ran India`s largest spirits company, United Spirits, and founded the now defunct Kingfisher Airlines, faces charges of fraud and money laundering worth $1.3 billion. He left India in March 2016 under the pretext of personal reasons.

Mallya has defrauded at least 17 Indian banks, drawing loans which he allegedly routed to gain full or partial stake in about 40 companies abroad.

As per sources in London, now that Mallya`s legal options in the UK have exhausted, he may still attempt to pull strings in the office of UK Home Secretary Priti Patel, who gets to have the final say on his extradition to India.

After losing an appeal in the London High Court against an extradition order to India, Mallya had filed an appeal in the UK Supreme Court earlier this month.

Earlier on Thursday, he offered the Central government that he will repay 100 per cent of his loan dues provided the case against him was closed. Mallya, however, said that his repeated offers to repay his dues have been ignored by the Modi government.

Interestingly, he congratulated the Indian government over the Rs 20 lakh crore economic package, which was announced to revive the economy that has taken an unprecedented hit due to the prolonged lockdown necessitated by the coronavirus pandemic.

If I sledge Virat Kohli, he will get angry, but Sachin Tendulkar would get more determined, says Wasim Akram | Cricket News

Former Pakistan skipper Wasim Akram on Wednesday (May 13) said that legendary India batsman Sachin Tendulkar edges out the current skipper Virat Kohli when it comes to mental toughness.

Notably, Wasim, who is regarded as one of the greatest bowlers to play the game of cricket so far, has bowled several times to Tendulkar during their playing days. Akram said that if he were to bowl to Kohli, the chances of claiming his wicket would be more than Tendulkar.

“He (Virat) is a modern great. Compared to Sachin, two different players altogether. He’s very aggressive, as a person, as a batsman – positive aggression. Sachin was calm and yet aggressive; different body language. So as a bowler you read that as well,” Akram told Aakash Chopra on his YouTube Channel.

“Sachin knew that if I would try and sledge him, he would get even more determined. This is my take and I might be wrong. If I am to sledge Kohli will lose his temper. So, when a batsman gets angry, perhaps he will attack you and that is when you have the maximum chances of getting him out,” he added.

However, as far as breaking the records set by Master Blaster Tendulkar are concerned, Akram said that it is unlikely that Kohli would be able to break Tendulkar’s records. Kohli, with 43 ODI centuries is on course to break Tendulkar’s world record of 49 ODI tons and it is expected that he would become the first batsman to score 50 ODI tons.

But as far as several other batting records created by Tendulkar are concerned, Akram is not sure of Kohli reaching there. “As far as his technique is concerned, no doubt Virat Kohli is a nightmare for bowlers now a days. He is supremely fit; he looks good. He enjoys his fielding and he does whatever a leader is supposed to do. You can just see and figure it out,” Akram said.

“I’m a straight shooter; I say what I feel. I can’t compare them both but I think, Virat Kohli will go places and he will break so many records. Can he break Sachin’s record? I doubt it. He has far too many records man. He’s getting there but there’s time,” he added.

Gadgets 360 has reached out to Vivo for clarity on the new model and will update this space as and when the company responds.

Competitor of Redmi Note 9 Pro?
Considering the specifications featured on the benchmark listing, the new Vivo phone could turn out to be a competitor to the Redmi Note 9 Pro that was launched in India in March with the Snapdragon 720G SoC and up to 6GB of RAM. The phone also has 128GB of onboard storage and comes with a quad rear camera setup. Furthermore, the Redmi Note 9 Pro has a hole-punch display with a 20:9 aspect ratio.

All the key features of the Redmi Note 9 Pro makes it a strong contender in the Rs. 17,000 price bracket in India.

We need to look for more details about the new Vivo phone to understand where it stands in the market. Also, pricing plays an important role in the smartphone world, and the Chinese company is yet to go aggressive in terms of pricing while launching its new models especially in India.
