Free Solo: Oscar-winning director Jimmy Chin on risking it all for the perfect shot

[ad_1]

The renowned adventurer and filmmaker has spent the past 20 years traveling the world, pushing himself to conquer one historic challenge after another, and engaging in the sort of daring activities that would be beyond many people’s imaginations.

“When you’re pushing for cutting-edge expeditions, you’re often in close proximity to potential disaster,” he told CNN Sport. “You’re constantly managing risk and you’re in fairly serious situations all the time, so your senses are very sharpened.”
But Chin’s intrepid way of life has been put on hold as the world comes to grips with the coronavirus pandemic. To a certain degree, his past expeditions have readied him for such uncertain times and, he said, he hoped others could learn from his experiences.

“This is a moment to pause, reevaluate and think about what’s important,” he added.

Jimmy Chin has photographed all around the world.

Early years

As a film director and National Geographic photographer, Chin has assembled a world-class portfolio of work. This year he returned from a trip to Antarctica, where he and a team of adventurers skied two new routes down the tallest and second-tallest peaks on the continent.

But such a life wasn’t always the plan.

As a child growing up in rural Minnesota, Chin was encouraged to pursue more traditional aspirations: excelling academically, as well as in martial arts and as a competitive swimmer.

But it was skiing on a small hill behind his house that he found freedom. “If I did well in everything else, I got to ski,” he said.

Already with a taste for the world of outdoor sports, Chin was introduced to climbing at college. At that point, he said, it was game over as the sport became a vehicle to see the world and explore places that made his “heart sing.”

He moved to Yosemite National Park where he worked odd jobs to fund his nomadic lifestyle, eventually picking up a camera and starting to shoot.

“I have so many incredible photographer friends who had a really noble vision for being an artist with their photography,” he laughed.

“But my whole entry into it was just ‘if I take these photos and I sell them I can make a little money so I can keep climbing.'”

His adventures have often involved very high stakes.

Capturing the impossible

Since he himself is a professional climber, Chin’s photography services have been that much more in demand over the years, with the relationship between him and his subjects an important element of his success.

“If they’re going to be doing this thing, and you’re the only one documenting, they’ve got to trust that you’re going to get it,” he said. “Then I have to trust that the athlete isn’t just doing it for the camera.”

Such a collaboration was put to the ultimate test in perhaps his finest, and most daring, work to date.

Alongside his wife Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, Chin documented Alex Honnold’s astonishing free solo climb up El Capitan in 2017.

Chin assembled a team of world-class climbers to help film Honnold ascend the 3,200-foot vertical rock face without a single safety rope.

Working together, they plotted where the cameras would be positioned on the wall so as to not distract Honnold on the day.

The historic feat won the team an Academy Award for Best Documentary at a ceremony that will live long in Chin’s memory.

“My confidence in Alex [Honnold] and his capacity to execute was very, very high,” said Chin, who had known Honnold for around 10 years before his death-defying ascent.

“I had seen him in very difficult situations before, completely unfazed, and I also knew that he’s the most calculated person I know. He’s not going to go do it if he’s not ready.”

'If he slips, he falls. If he falls, he dies' -- Climbing 3,000 feet without ropes

Dealing with fear

Despite his years of experience, Chin said watching his friend train for and complete the climb was an ordeal.

“The fear was less acute than I think people might have perceived; it was more of a long-term dread,” he said, now able to laugh at the thought.

“I felt like it was on my shoulders for almost three years, from when we conceived of the project to filming it with him.

“Every day, whether he was free-soloing or not, there’s a potential for somebody to get hurt or die because you’re in these environments.”

Dealing with uncertainty is an occupational hazard for Chin and although meticulous planning can help iron out some of the danger, managing fear itself is essential to coping with the unexpected. Remaining calm, avoiding emotional decisions, can often be the difference between life and death.

“You have [to] step outside of yourself and be objective about a situation and make very objective decisions,” he said.

Chin has embarked on climbing and skiing adventures.

Lockdown lessons

Though still working at home on a number of projects, it has taken a once-in-a-century event like the global pandemic to finally slow Chin down. He is now at least able to enjoy time with his young family.

“I’m just out in the yard playing with the kids, usually a rarity for me,” he said, acknowledging these were the most consecutive days he’d spent with his four-and six-year-old children.

“I don’t get that much time to hang out with them so I’ve been running around the yard and having fun.”

Living in a rural area means Chin is able to leave his house while still abiding by social distancing guidelines, a must for someone whose mental and physical well-being is “tied” to going into the wilderness.

He is a man who, in more ordinary times, usually searches for solitude, reveling in having time to think and ask existential questions. “It’s good to think about them,” he said.

It is not the sort of life many would choose, Chin admitted, but he hoped people in lockdown could learn from his experiences.

“Those are the kinds of experiences that I go and seek and now there’s an opportunity for people to do that. Take this moment.”

Analysis | ‘You reek of ignorance’: Fox News hosts who once hailed Michael Flynn’s judge now say he’s hopelessly biased

0

[ad_1]

And for this, Sullivan earned the ire of Fox News hosts who have been arguing that Flynn’s prosecution was the canary in the coal mine of a coup against President Trump.

“And now what he’s doing is he’s poisoning the 2020 election by trying to make it look like [Attorney General] Bill Barr,” she said. “He’s trying to destroy the whole thing so that Barr looks like the villain here.”

Sean Hannity offered an extensive broadside against Sullivan later in Fox’s prime-time programming.

“Mr. Sullivan, what part of General Flynn being ambushed and set up by [former FBI deputy director Andrew] McCabe and [former FBI director James] Comey don’t you understand?” Hannity said Wednesday night, accusing Sullivan of taking a “clearly political stand.”

He added: “You botched this from Day One, and you had a bias from Day One,” he seethed. “You reek of ignorance, you reek of political bias!”

But if Sullivan had botched this from Day One, that’s certainly news … to Fox News. There was a time not that long ago that its opinion hosts and analysts lifted up Sullivan as a paragon of virtue. At the time, some of them wishfully believed he was about to blow the lid off the supposed scandal they’re suddenly pressing with gusto again.

Nobody on Fox leaned as hard into the idea that Sullivan was their hero-in-waiting as Pirro.

In a segment at the time, she hailed Sullivan as “a jurist unafraid of the swamp, a judge who has a track record of calling out prosecutorial misconduct, a man who does not tolerate injustice or abuse of power.” She also suggested Flynn’s guilty plea might be thrown out entirely at that point, and that it could undo then-special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s entire Russia investigation in the process.

“The amazing part of it is,” Pirro said, “if he does it, then the house of cards of Robert Mueller falls.”

Hannity at the time also supported the idea.

“Tomorrow, by 3 p.m., U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan could have the answers to all of these questions,” Hannity said, adding: “This is the same judge who dismissed the corruption conviction, eight convictions, of Republican senator Ted Stevens after discovering rampant misconduct from federal prosecutors in that case, including what he called a blatant attempt to withhold exculpatory evidence.”

Fox News legal analyst Gregg Jarrett said, “If he finds that they falsified evidence, he can throw out the guilty plea of Flynn and set him free.”

“Why do I think we’re headed in that direction?” Hannity responded rhetorically.

Hannity then again hopefully brought up Sullivan’s handling of the Stevens case, to which Fox News contributor Sara Carter responded: “And Ted Stevens is a perfect example of why Judge Sullivan now … overseeing the Flynn case is so important.”

When Sullivan probed further into the prosecution of Flynn, Jarrett hailed the action, saying, “You know, these prosecutors, Mueller’s prosecutors, tried to follow a fast one on this federal judge, Emmet Sullivan. He was having none of it.”

Former congressman and occasional Hannity fill-in host Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) said at one point, “I like this Judge Sullivan. He’s got a good record of doing this. I’m glad he’s probing into this.”

Added Carter at another point: “Well, I think Judge Sullivan is not just going to sit back and allow Mueller and the special counsel to walk all over him. I think he is definitely going to make a statement.”

He did make a statement — except it wasn’t at all the one they were anticipating. Rather than throw out the prosecution and rebuke Mueller’s team, Sullivan went very much in the opposite direction. He played up the gravity of Flynn’s offenses and rebuked his legal team for trying to suggest that Flynn had been railroaded into lying to the FBI.

Sullivan repeatedly forced Flynn to restate that he was guilty of knowingly lying to the FBI. He also pointed to Flynn’s various other lies, including about lobbying for Turkey, and said, “Arguably, you sold your country out.” At one point he even asked prosecutors whether they had considered charging Flynn with treason.

That doesn’t mean Sullivan might not ultimately grant the Justice Department’s attempt to dismiss the case. But it is a remarkable turn from the people who once hailed Sullivan as their savior-in-waiting — as long as he ruled like he wanted them to.

Maybe the lesson from the previous instance is that one shouldn’t assume what a ruling might be just because a judge like Sullivan seeks more information.

Aerobics at any age a super treat for your brain

Aerobics at any age a super treat for your brain

It’s never too late to lace up shoes and work up a sweat for brain health as older adults, even couch potatoes, may perform better on certain thinking and memory tests after just six months of aerobic exercise, says a new study.

Researchers found that after six months of exercise, participants improved by 5.7 per cent on tests of executive function, which includes mental flexibility and self-correction.

Verbal fluency, that tests how quickly you can retrieve information, increased by 2.4 per cent. This change in verbal fluency is what one can expect to see in someone five years younger.

“As we all find out eventually, we lose a bit mentally and physically as we age. But even if you start an exercise programme later in life, the benefit to your brain may be immense,” said study author Marc J Poulin from University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada.

Aerobic exercise gets blood moving through your body.

“As our study found, it may also get blood moving to your brain, particularly in areas responsible for verbal fluency and executive functions. Our finding may be important, especially for older adults at risk for Alzheimer’s and other dementias and brain disease,” Poulin said in a study published in Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

The study involved 206 adults who prior to starting the six-month exercise intervention worked out no more than four days per week at a moderate intensity for 30 minutes or less, or no more than two days per week a high intensity for 20 minutes or less per day.

They had an average age of 66 and no history of heart or memory problems.

Participants were given thinking and memory tests at the start of the study, as well as an ultrasound to measure blood flow in the brain.

“Our study showed that six months’ worth of vigorous exercise may pump blood to regions of the brain that specifically improve your verbal skills as well as memory and mental sharpness,” informed Poulin.

“At a time when these results would be expected to be decreasing due to normal aging, to have these types of increases is exciting,” the authors wrote.

TV star Gulki Joshi on her intense role in Zee Theatre’s teleplay ‘Purush’ and working with Ashutosh Rana | Television News

[ad_1]

New Delhi: Famous television actress Gulki Joshi, who has previously won a million hearts with her act in TV shows such as ‘Phir Subah Hogi’ and ‘Nadaan Parindey Ghar Aaja’, has now returned to theatre after a gap of two years. She is seen as Ambika Bhagawat in ZEE Theatre’s teleplay ‘Purush’.

“I was very scared,” the young actress admits. The role is that of a fearless and resilient social activist. The teleplay is available on ZEE5.

“In my past experiences with theatre, I used to be completely immersed in the scene. I was apprehensive about coming across either aggressive or someone too timid, and achieving that balance was crucial,” said Gulki. Apart from playing the layered and complex role of Ambika, Joshi also had to match step with veteran actor Ashutosh Rana who plays the role of the tyrannical and misogynistic politician Gulab Singh in the play. “Working with Ashutoshji was very scary in the beginning and eventually extremely comfortable. I genuinely learnt a lot from him and the best thing was absolutely no ego hassles,” the actress added.

Set in Meerut, UP, in a middle-class Brahmin home, Jaywant Dalvi’s Purush creates a layered narrative as the plot explores a number of glaring ideologies that plague men as well as women in Indian society. In a regressive and unyielding scenario, Ambika not only fights for herself but also stands up for other women who are subjected to injustice or oppression. Her fight against the corrupt Gulab Singh is aided by others like her who never give up and eventually find a way to gain justice. Despite the role itself being demanding, Gulki found herself identifying greatly with Ambika’s character. She felt the role was offered to her because her personality is quite similar to Ambika and even offstage she doesn’t shy away from standing for her principles.

One of the play’s most pivotal scenes where Ambika is raped by Gulab Singh proved to be an experience that, Gulki says, will never leave her as her emotional state lasted a lot longer after the director yelled cut.
“At one point I  broke down because I got into character and didn’t know where to stop. I could not get out of the scene even after the final shot was okayed,” Gulki adds.

Huawei Foldable Phone With Galaxy Fold-Like Design Reported to Launch This Year, Tipped to Be Aggressively Priced

0

[ad_1]

Huawei is reportedly working on an aggressively priced foldable device for launch later this year. Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, claims that Huawei is working on in-folding foldable device, similar to the Galaxy Fold, instead of its previously released outward-folding phones like the Huawei Mate X and Huawei Mate Xs. Young claims that this device will be aggressively priced, which would be welcome, given that its previous foldable phone models were both priced above EUR 2,000.

Young, in an interview with GregglesTV on YouTube revealed a few details about Huawei’s foldable phone plans this year. He noted that the company is looking to bring both clamshell and in-folding designs to the market. It may launch the in-folding model as soon as September or October of 2020, and price it aggressively for wider reach.

In the video, Young elaborated, “We think that a lot of companies are looking at Samsung’s strategy for the clamshell (design) for the more aggressively priced version of a foldable and then the in-folding version for a more expensive and tablet-like experience. We expect to see Huawei pursue both the clamshell and in-folding models, and we think they’re struggling to come up with an ultra-thin glass solution right now for the clamshell. But we do expect them to do an in-folding model later this year, and be pretty aggressively priced.” Young also said that the company has ordered over 500,000 display units according to his supply chain sources.

Samsung is also reportedly working on the Galaxy Fold 2, and the company is expected to launch it alongside the Galaxy Note 20 series sometime in August. Huawei could also launch this in-folding phone model alongside its next-gen Mate series, as that is when Huawei traditionally releases the flagship series. Samsung introduced the Galaxy Z Flip in February with a clamshell-like foldable design, and Huawei looks to introduce a new foldable phone with the same design, according to Young. However, the in-folding phone will release first, and the clamshell variant should be launched after that, after Huawei finds a solution for the ultra-thin glass.

Five surfers die in the Netherlands as sea foam layer hampers recue

0

[ad_1]

The group ran into difficulties at the northern harbor head of the Scheveningen district of The Hague in the Netherlands on Monday evening.

Despite a large-scale rescue operation, only one member of the group could be saved, according to KNRM, the Royal Netherlands Sea Rescue Organization.

A statement issued online by the rescue service said its efforts were “complicated by the man-sized foam layer at sea and on the beach,” while “strong winds and high waves also made it very difficult to provide relief from the harbor pier.”

Police, firefighters, the coastguard, units from KNRM and other emergency workers were all involved in the rescue operation, in which a helicopter was used to try to blow away the foam and improve visibility.

Shark knocks 7-year-old Florida boy off his surfboard

Two of the bodies were recovered on Monday and another two the following morning, according to the KNRM post. A fifth body has yet to be recovered. The victims’ identities have not yet been released.

Investigators are now looking into what caused the sea foam and its possible role in the tragedy.

Johan Remkes, mayor of The Hague, described the events as a “terrible tragedy” involving “young, physically fit, sporty people, who know the sea like the back of their hand.”

Big wave surfers wrestle with death to feed addiction thrill
In a statement published on the city’s website, Remkes offered his condolences and said: “The heavy grief among people in the Scheveningen community is unfathomable. People here understand better than anybody else that ‘The sea gives and the sea takes’, but the way in which so many young lives ended abruptly and so many families and groups of friends have been affected is incredibly brutal.”

The mayor, who witnessed the incident as it happened, said: “How is it possible that such experienced surfers were completely taken by surprise at a spot they knew so well? But also: how is it possible that a drama unfolded at one harbour inlet while at the other harbour inlet, not even 100 metres away, people were still surfing until late in the evening?”

Australian surfing contest canceled because of shark threat

Pledging to investigate the incident, he said: “Today we remember the victims. Tomorrow we will start trying to understand what happened.”

Katja Philippart is a marine ecologist at the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research. She told CNN that she is investigating whether algae density may have affected the level of foam in the water.

Philippart said that the levels of the algae are often blooming — or high — in April and May.

“At the end of a bloom, these colonies start to deteriorate, releasing the mucus into the water. Wind-driven waves that stir up the mucus-rich water result in the formation of foam. Depending on the wind direction, this foam can be blown to the coast where it then accumulates.”

The surfers were all “very experienced watermen,” according to the Holland Surfing Association, which posted its condolences on Facebook.

“They were robbed due to the exceptional circumstances and fate has struck: 5 of them tragically died,” the post said.

“We express our sympathy to the relatives and everyone involved. In the surf community in Scheveningen and far beyond there is great defeat, we are in deep mourning for this loss.”

Magnus Carlsen launches $1 million online chess tour

0

[ad_1]

The Norwegian world champion organized the Magnus Carlsen Invitational last month, an online chess tournament with a total prize fund of $250,000, making it the most lucrative online chess tournament in history.
Having won the inaugural version of the competition, Carlsen now wants to combine four online chess tournaments — including the Invitational — to form the Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour, which will have a combined prize fund of $1 million, the highest ever in online chess.

Three more “majors” will take place between May and August before the tour culminates in a grand final, which will take place between August 9-20.

Carlsen speaks on his computer in a press room.

With much of live sport in hiatus because of the coronavirus, the opportunity to establish chess as a mainstream sport is a key reason behind the tour’s launch, says Carlsen.

“The Invitational was a lot of fun and we heard great feedback from the players, our broadcast partners and the viewers,” the 29-year-old Carlsen said in a statement.

“While physical chess tournaments and sports are still either canceled or postponed, bringing an entire chess tour online is what I feel is right for chess now.”

The tour will look to build on the success of the Invitational, which broke online viewer records for chess.

It was the first online chess tournament to be broadcast on TV, going out on Spanish, German, Russian, Norwegian and Czech television.

The top four players from the previous competition will automatically qualify for the next “major.”

The grand final will be contested between the winners of the individual tournaments.

The next tournament, the Lindores Abbey Rapid Challenge, which starts on May 19, will feature Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, Ding Liren, and Alireza Firouzja, who all competed in the invitational.

Eight new players will also participate: Wesley So, Alexander Grischuk, Sergey Karjakin, Levon Aronian, Wei Yi, Daniil Dubov, Jan-Krzysztof Duda, and Yu Yangyi.

[ad_1]

The ability of art forms to transcend boundaries has been evident for years. The stories that it tells have helped shape and define societies. Theatre is no exception to this. In its endeavour to bring relatable stories, Zee Theatre, a segment of Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd., has added two critically acclaimed plays from across the border, to their repository – Jhaanjhar Di Paanwan Chhankaar and Mushk. The plays are now available on ZEE5 Global.

With these new, relatable and poignant stories, Zee Theatre has made quality content accessible to dynamic audiences across the world.

Since 2015, Zee Theatre has offered more than 80 famous teleplays across genres and languages – from suspense and drama to musicals, social issues, classics and satire.

On adding two international plays to their current repository of teleplays, Shailja Kejriwal, Chief Creative Officer – Special Projects, Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd. says: “Zee Theatre has meticulously worked to showcase the finest of theatre to its audiences, telling innately Indian stories and skilfully adapting international content. By going beyond borders with our teleplays, we realised the potential that comes with creating content for global audiences and working with international talent. Our goal of showcasing the best of theatre is now further magnified given its larger spectrum.”

Jhaanjhar Di Paanwan Chhankaar is based on a youthful, visually impaired man who chooses to live away from his over-protective mother. He forms a close friendship with his neighbour (an actor) who is set to essay an unusual role in a film. The play addresses how society responds to individuals with disabilities, be it physical or emotional, and regards them as pariahs. The play stars Sarmad Khoosat (also the co-director), Samiya Mumtaz, Zain Afzal, Iman Shahid and is directed by Kanwal Khoosat.

“It was an enriching experience to collaborate with Zee Theatre on this play because of the strong message it packs. Being involved in dual roles allowed me to explore the sensitive story and its characters,” says Sarmad Khoosat. The actor, filmmaker and screenwriter is best known for directing TV shows such as Humsafar, Pani Jaisa Piyar, Baaghi, Manto and Shehr-e-Zaat.

Zee Theatre’s second offering Mushk, is directed by Kanwal Khoosat and stars two of the most versatile actors from across the border – Sania Saeed and Nimra Bucha. Mushk is the story of a reclusive genius writer and a journalist who visits her house to conduct an interview. Paring away each other’s lies and evasions, their interaction reveals an increasingly complex pattern in an apparently simple melody. Through the story, the characters realize the meaning of love and that things are not really as they seem.

“The allure of Mushk lies in its complex and delicately woven plot along with strong performances by Nimra and Sania. Their portrayal of Sophiya and Zoay’s individualistic feelings is honest and relatable. To see Mushk go beyond the boundaries of where it was first conceptualised is lovely. By collaborating with Zee Theatre, we are happy to showcase our creative vision to the rest of the world,” said Kanwal Khoosat.
