Robert Pattinson on being Hollywood’s new Batman | Movies News

[ad_1]

Los Angeles: Actor Robert Pattinson is aware about the “Batman” legacy and the anticipation around the new version, and says all the buzz makes taking on the avatar of the caped crusader a “little spicy”.

In a GQ profile, the actor, who is spending lockdown with his girlfriend in a rented apartment in London, opened up on the upcoming version of “The Batman”, Christopher Nolan’s much-hyped “Tenet” and life under self-isolation, reports variety.com.

The shooting of Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” was suspended in March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“I kind of like the fact that not only are there very, very, very well-done versions of the character which seem pretty definitive, but I was thinking that there are multiple definitive playings of the character,” Pattinson said.

“You’ve seen this sort of lighter version, you’ve seen a kind of jaded version, a kind of more animalistic version. And the puzzle of it becomes quite satisfying, to think: Where’s my opening? Also, it’s a legacy part, right? I like that. There’s so few things in life where people passionately care about it before it’s even happened. You can almost feel that pushback of anticipation, and so it kind of energizes you a little bit. It’s different from when you’re doing a part and there’s a possibility that no one will even see it. Right? In some ways it’s, I don’t know… It makes you a little kind of spicy,” he added.

Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet”, which is also shot in India, has been described as “an action epic evolving from the world of international espionage. And Pattinson says shooting the film was “insane”.

“(‘Tenet’ is) so insane,” Pattinson said while describing how the whole crew used to fly together from one country to another over the shoot.

“In each country there’s, like, an enormous set-piece scene, which is like the climax of a normal movie. In every single country,” he said, adding that “there’s actually no time traveling” in the film.

Pattinson is a private person, and that’s why he isn’t affected by the isolation much.

“I spend so much time by myself, ’cause you’re just kind of always forced to, that I can’t really remember what it was like not really having that kind of lifestyle,” Pattinson said.

Now, he is hearing about the isolation experiences of his friends and family.

“I just realise, everyone is so, so vulnerable to isolation. It’s quite shocking,” he said.

Why is Russia’s Covid-19 mortality rate so low?

0

[ad_1]

But one important difference separates Russia from the other two nations. As of Monday, in the United States, which has been in the midst of the pandemic for almost two months, the mortality rate from Covid-19 was 6%, according to Johns Hopkins; in Brazil, hard-hit for a month, the mortality was nearly 7%. And in parts of Western Europe, including Italy, France, Spain, Belgium and the UK the mortality rate was over 10%.

But in Russia, where the pandemic arrived about the same time as Brazil, the mortality rate sat at less than 1%.

Dr. Elena Malinnikova, the chief of infectious diseases in the Russian Ministry of Health, has a simple explanation: The low mortality is due to timely detection of infection as well as the fact that that Russians tend to see their doctor soon after symptoms appear.
Russian journalists have reported that more than 60% of all cases diagnosed in the country have been in Moscow, which has a younger and healthier population than rural areas.
A safer way to get America back to work

No matter the reason, the extremely low mortality rate is quite unexpected. So, I compared various factors to try to understand what’s going on.

The testing difference between Russia and Brazil is enormous. Dr. Malinnikova and Russian leaders should be very proud. At the time of writing, they have tested 40,995 people per million population. In contrast, Brazil has a very low rate, at 3,459 tests per million citizens. (for comparison, the US has a rate of 30,937 per million).
As we have seen in Switzerland, Germany and other countries with extensive testing, mortality rates start low because so many cases are identified and never progress to serious illness though as the German epidemic has matured, the fatality rate has increased from less than 0.5% to about 4.5%.
The profound testing difference may indeed be the main reason, but other factors can contribute to risk of death from Covid-19 infection, including being a male, advanced age, heart disease, chronic lung disease, diabetes and obesity, for which comparative countrywide information is available.
Of note, Russia has high rates of these comorbid conditions, especially among men.
Unfortunately, neither Russia nor Brazil has released much information regarding the age and sex distribution of the cases or the deaths in their country, though in late April, Brazil reported that 59% of coronavirus deaths were in men. However, per the World Bank, 15% of Russia’s population is 65 years old or older, compared to Brazil with 9% (the US sits at 16%). This difference would predict that Brazil would have a lower mortality rate than Russia.
Cardiac disease also is much more prevalent in Russia than Brazil. A recent study suggests that by any measurement, Russia has at least twice the rate of complications from cardiovascular disease as Brazil — another reason Covid-19 death rates would be lower, not higher, in Brazil than Russia.
No statistics for rates of chronic lung disease by country are available. However, smoking, a major cause of lung disease, is more common in Russia (57% of men and 23% of women) than Brazil (17% of men and 10% of women). In contrast, death from lung disease is lower in Russia (14.5 per 100,000) than in Brazil (26.6 per 100,000).
Diabetes is about half as common in Russia (6%) compared to Brazil (10%) while rates of obesity are about the same: As of 2016, Russia was 70th in the world with a 23% prevalence while Brazil sat at 22% for 82nd in the world. (By comparison, the United States had the 12th highest rate at 36%).

Therefore, the known and measurable risk factors for severe disease point to Russia having at least a comparable, if not a higher, death rate than Brazil.

So, is Dr. Malinnikova correct? Is the difference really due to testing and the apparently efficient Russian health care system?

Perhaps, but there may be other ways to explain the differences. We do not know, for example, how Russia attributes death to Covid-19. If a person with heart disease dies with the infection, which condition is the “cause?” How quickly does information come to Moscow from the rural areas which may have higher death rates given the higher rate of comorbidities?

And what about nursing home deaths — are these being included as Covid-19 related, even if a test was not performed?

As in the US and elsewhere, accurate classification of a Covid-19-related death remains very important to our understanding of the disease and the effectiveness of our attempts to control it. However, certainty about how, exactly, a person died remains a very difficult determination.

Diseases are not independent of each other: someone with heart disease will predictably fare worse with pneumonia than someone without heart disease — but should the person die, what is the true cause of death? Probably a collision of illnesses that collectively overwhelm a person rather than a single nameable cause.

This means that the cause of death can be tilted one way or another while still remaining accurate. And with a disease such as Covid-19, where political tensions are evident in many countries, this latitude (and the temptation to exploit it) calls to mind the chilling statement popularly attributed to Josef Stalin, though it’s far from clear that he said it: “It is not who votes but who counts the votes that matters.”

In other words, the death rate from Covid-19 in Russia and worldwide is defined not by an internationally agreed upon definition, but by the authorities who are reporting. Once again, we may find our understanding of Covid-19 stymied by an altogether new uncertainty — this one not medical at all, but entirely the product of political calculations.

Typhoon Vongfong rapidly intensifies as it nears the Philippines

0

[ad_1]

With typhoons or hurricanes, rapid intensification is an increase in maximum sustained winds of 35 mph (55 kph) in 24 hours.

From Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday afternoon, Vongfong easily met that definition, strengthening from a modest tropical storm with winds of 60 mph (95 kph) to the equivalent of a major hurricane. Maximum sustained winds are now up to 120 mph (195 kph) and the storm is still strengthening.

This area of the world is no stranger to rapid intensification. Many storms undergo rapid intensification each year due to the extremely warm sea surface temperatures.

But this is the first named storm of the season in the West Pacific.

It didn’t exist until Tuesday, and now it will hammer the Philippines as the equivalent of a category 3 or 4 storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

Vongfong’s impact

Weather models had difficulty forecasting the intensity of Vongfong, in part because of the small size of the storm.

Now that the storm has intensified so quickly there is no doubt that it will be more than a rainmaker when it reaches the coast.

“Very heavy rainfall, damaging winds, and powerful storm surge are all major concerns with this storm,” CNN Meteorologist Tom Sater said.

“One silver lining with this being a small storm is that the strong typhoon strength winds only extend out about 25 kilometers from the center.”

While the damaging winds will only occur right along the immediate path of the storm, heavy rain will have a more widespread impact.

Rainfall amounts of 100 to 250 mm (four to 10 inches) will impact vast areas of the Visayas and Bicol Regions through northern Luzon.

Vongfong will pass just offshore of Samar province Thursday, before making its first landfall in the Bicol region, north of Legazpi Thursday night local time.

After hitting the Bicol region, the storm will retain most of its strength and move into northeastern Luzon Friday night.

“There is a possibility that the center of the storm could stay just offshore,” Sater said. “It’s not a great chance, but if the forecast shifts just 50 kilometers to the east, it would keep the worst of the winds and storm surge offshore.”

Slow start to the 2020 typhoon season

The West Pacific typhoon season doesn’t have a defined beginning and end like the Atlantic hurricane season, as storms can form throughout the year.

While the peak of the typhoon season is late summer, there are frequently named storms in the winter or early spring due to the warm waters of the Pacific.

This is the eighth-latest start to the season since 1950, according to Phil Klotzbach, a research scientist at Colorado State University. The last time we had a later start was 2016 when the first named storm of the season didn’t arrive until the first week of July.

The Philippines are located in the prime breeding grounds of the tropical Pacific. In an average year, the region is impacted by eight to nine storms.

Late-starting seasons tend to be slightly quieter, but the evidence is weak, according to Klotzbach.

Jet Airways crisis: Fresh expressions of interest invited for defunct airline | Companies News

0

[ad_1]

Mumbai: Jet Airways insolvency resolution professional on Wednesday invited fresh expressions of interest (EoI) for the grounded airline. This is the fourth time that EoI has been invited for Jet Airways, which was shuttered last year.

The last date for submission of bid documents is May 28 and the final list of prospective resolution applicants will be issued on June 10, as per a public document. The decision for issuing fresh EoI was taken during the committee of creditors (CoC) meeting held recently.

Last week, the CoC had met to discuss the way forward for the airline. It was the 11th meeting of the CoC.

In March this year, the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) had allowed 90 days’ extension for the corporate insolvency resolution process of the airline.

This came after the airline’s resolution professional had filed an application in NCLT seeking 90 days’ extension for the insolvency process after it failed to attract any bidder.

The CoC on February 18, had set a new deadline of March 10 for submission of bids for the grounded airline after South American conglomerate Synergy Group and New Delhi-based Prudent ARC failed to meet the previous deadline.

Later, Synergy Group backed out of the bidding process over slot issues. The March 10 deadline was set after Russia’s Far East Asia Development Fund also evinced interest in Jet Airways.

The cash-strapped airline, which was grounded in April 2019, owes more than Rs 8,000 crore to banks, with public sector lenders having significant exposure.

The NCLT on June 20, 2019, admitted the insolvency petition filed by the lenders’ consortium led by State Bank of India against Jet Airways. The bankruptcy court had appointed Ashish Chhawchharia as RP.

Jet Airways has liabilities over Rs 26,000 crore, which include over Rs 10,000 crore of vendor dues, Rs 8,500 crore along with interest owed to the lenders, over Rs 3,000 crore in salary dues, and over Rs 13,500 crore in accumulated losses over the past few years.

Khloe Kardashian vents her ire on ‘social platforms’ speculating about her second pregnancy | People News

[ad_1]

New Delhi: Khloe Kardashian on Wednesday (May 13, 2020) vented her anger over people on ‘social platforms’ speculating of her ‘second pregnancy’ with her ex-boyfriend Tristan Thompson.

“I don’t go on social platforms much these days AND this is one of the main reasons as to why I stay away. The sick and hurtful things people say,” the 35-year old reality TV star said on Twitter.

Khloe’s anger over the comments and posts on the rumours of her second child resulted in her adding, “I am disgusted by so many things I am seeing. SMH people swear they know everything about me. Including my uterus. Sick.”

She also said, “The nasty things you’re saying about me over A RUMOR! I have seen so many hurtful/despicable stories and tweets about me over a false story. And if it were true…. it’s MY LIFE, NOT YOURS.”

“Funny how picky and choosy some can be with who and how you feel others should live their lives. I believe people should focus on their own lives/families, put energy into bettering the scary world we are currently living in, and try projecting positivity as opposed to nastiness,” said Khloe in her last tweet.

Khloe’s fans all over the world and the ‘Internet’s troll army’ on social media platforms have made her pregnancy rumours the talk of the town from the past few days.

Khloe’s anger in the tweet was mainly directed towards the internet troll army who said things like “Khloe Kardashian has committed herself to getting played by Tristan for the rest of her life” and “I guess Khloe Kardashian just wants her children to have the same father,” in waves of tweets that insulted Khloe for having a baby (if true) with her ex.

The reason behind the trolling tweets was specifically because of Khloe’s history with her ex. People didn’t like the rumour of Khloe having a child with her ex who reportedly had cheated with her on multiple occasions in the past. She and her professional basketball player ex split after the cheating scandal (including with Khloe’s sister, Kylie’s former best friends, Jordyn Woods) broke out in public.

Khloe already has one baby girl ‘True’ with Tristan.

The rumours were not a surprise for the people who watch the 13-year old show Keeping Up With The Kardashians (KUWTK) as Khloe has been talking recently about needing sperm for another child with the ex, and even frozen her eggs for future use, so this pregnancy may not be any kind of accident.

Even after Khloe blasted at people with her tweet, there were Twitter users who said things like “She probably is pregnant. Otherwise she would have written a tweet where she would have denied everything laughing over it,” and “There’s our answer. Congratulation Koko”,

There were also many fans, who wrote stuff like, “Don’t listen to them! They don’t even know what they speak about, just keep focusing on yourself & True, all these comments should not disrupt your peace Sparkles” and “You know that people WILL always talk even if you’re doing good. Please let them talk, you have so many people that love you here. It’s sad because of those people, we the people that love you can’t have you here like we used to have you!”

US Embassy says Covid-19 threat in Tanzania’s main city ‘extremely high’

0

[ad_1]

Wednesday’s health alert notes that the Tanzanian government has not released any data on Covid-19 since April 29.

“Despite limited official reports, all evidence points to exponential growth of the epidemic in Dar and other locations in Tanzania.”

The embassy alert did not provide sources for its assessment.

CNN has reached out to the Tanzania government spokesman for comment and has yet to receive a response.

President John Magufuli has suggested his citizens “pray the virus away,” and allowed places of worship to remain open while schools closed. The President vowed he wouldn’t put the country under any lockdown, but did make social distancing and mask-wearing mandatory.

Africa's leaders forced to confront healthcare systems they neglected for years
Zambia temporarily closed its border to Tanzania this week after it reported an increase in cases in the town of Nakonde, local media reported.

The US Embassy said, “Limited hospital capacity throughout Tanzania could result in life-threatening delays for medical care, including for those with COVID-19.”

The embassy urged all US government personnel and their families remain at home except for essential activities, and substantially limit the entry of nonresidents into private homes.

It signaled that US citizens in Tanzania should expect to remain in the country for an “indefinite period” as the government “does not anticipate arranging additional repatriation flights in Tanzania at this time.”

The last coronavirus report to come from the Prime Minister’s office on April 29 had the confirmed case toll at 480. According to the World Health Organization, Tanzania has recorded 509 cases and 21 people have died.

Fragile health systems

WHO warned that coronavirus would devastate health systems in Africa, killing as many as 190,000 people on the continent in the first year of the pandemic.

It predicted 5.5 million could require hospital treatment, a number that would overwhelm the medical capacity of most places on the continent.

Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, WHO regional director for Africa, said in a statement last week that while cases in Africa may not spread to the extent as other places, coronavirus could be a permanent fixture if governments are not proactive about their containment strategies.

“Covid-19 could become a fixture in our lives for the next several years unless a proactive approach is taken by many governments in the region. We need to test, trace, isolate and treat,” Moeti said in the news release.
