Rishabh Pant slog sweeps Tim Southee for 107m six: Rahul, Glenn Phillips in shock
Rishabh Pant’s love for hitting sixes in the nineties is well known across the cricketing world. While most batters tend to adopt a cautious approach during the ‘nervous nineties’—fearing that one mis-hit could deny them a well-earned century—such concerns don’t seem to exist in Pant’s play-book. Unfortunately, this bold approach led to a heartbreaking moment on Day 4 of the 1st Test between India and New Zealand at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, where Pant narrowly missed out on what would have been his seventh Test hundred.
When Pant was batting on 90, Tim Southee bowled the third delivery of the 87th over. The star batter went down on one knee and slog-swept it over square leg for a massive 107m six—a shot so spectacular it could make jaws drop, quite literally. New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips, fielding nearby, was visibly stunned as his jaw dropped in disbelief, watching the ball sail over the boundary. Even local boy KL Rahul, who was batting alongside Pant, couldn’t believe his eyes. Rahul stood in shock for a moment, then broke into a slight smile as Pant effortlessly muscled the delivery away.
