GUWAHATI: Conrad Sangma and Neiphiu Rio took oath on Tuesday as the CMs of Meghalaya and Nagaland respectively at back-to-back ceremonies in Shillong and Kohima attended by PM Narendra Modi. This is 72-year-old Rio’s fifth and 45-year-old Sangma’s second term as CMs of their respective states.

For Nagaland, there was the added significance of getting its first-ever woman minister in Salhoutuonuo Krusem (56), who along with US-educated lawyer and social entrepreneur Hekani Jakhalu broke the glass ceiling on March 2 by becoming the first pair of women MLAs in 60 years of statehood. Both are from Rio’s NDPP.
Home minister Amit Shah, BJP national president J P Nadda and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, the architect of the saffron party’s alliances in both states, were in the audience at the swearing-in of the new NPP-led government in Meghalaya and the NDPP-BJP ministry in Nagaland. Sikkim CM Prem Singh Tamang and his Jharkhand counterpart Hemant Soren attended Sangma’s oath-taking ceremony.

Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar, both from NPP, were sworn in as deputy CMs of Meghalaya, while Taditui Rangkau Zeliang of NDPP, a former CM, and BJP’s Yanthungo Patton took oath as Rio’s deputies. This is the first time that both states have two deputy CMs each in their 12-member ministries.
Besides Sangma and his two deputies, Meghalaya governor Phagu Chauhan administered oath of office to BJP’s Alexander Laloo Hek, Marcuise N Marak, Rakkam A Sangma, Ampareen Lyngdoh, Comingone Ymbon and AT Mondal from NPP, UDP’s Paul Lyngdoh and Kyrmen Shylla, and Shakliar Warjri of HSPDP.

In Nagaland, those sworn in by governor La Ganesan include G Kaito Aye, KG Kenye, CL John and Metsubo Jamir of NDPP, and Temjen Imna Along, Jacob Zhimomi, P Paiwang Konyak and P Bashangmongba of BJP.
Sangma said, “This government will continue to focus on infrastructure and social sector by giving lot of importance to youths in terms of employment. There will be more focus on improving the overall delivery mechanism, power infrastructure, IT, health and education sectors.”

Rio took to Twitter to thank ally BJP’s central leadership. “Honoured and humbled to be sworn-in as the CM of Nagaland in the presence of the @PMOIndia Shri @narendramodi ji, @HMOIndia Shri @AmitShah ji, Shri @JPNadda…,” he wrote.

PM Modi returned to Guwahati in the evening and was given a public reception at the airport. About 20,000 people, including cultural troupes in traditional attires, were present. He is to travel to Agartala on Wednesday for the swearing-in of Manik Saha.
