SC refuses to stay IPS officer Satish Chandra Verma’s sacking | India News – Times of India
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to stay the Centre’s order to dismiss IPS officer Satish Chandra Verma and asked the Delhi high court to decide on the plea against his sacking expeditiously.
A day after the Delhi HC refused to grant interim stay on the government’s order, Verma, running against time as he is to retire at the end of the month, rushed to the apex court pleading for an “honourable” exit as he served the force for more than 30 years. But the bench said it could not do anything and the matter had to be examined by the HC and advanced the hearing in HC froM January 2023 to November 22.
On Verma’s plea that he should be allowed to retire honourably, the bench said officers had to face tribulation for doing what they think is right and assured him that if truth is on his side then he will get justice. Solicitor general Tushar Mehta, however, said there is also a darker side of the story but added he would not elaborate. He opposed advancing of hearing in HC saying there are many pensioners still waiting to be heard and Verma’s plea should not be heard out-of-turn. The bench then disposed of Verma’s plea and asked the HC to decide on it expeditiously.
The Centre sacked Verma, a 1986-batch officer who was once part of the SIT to probe Ishrat Jahan encounter case, after taking permission from the Delhi HC, which also granted him protection till Monday. He is due to retire on September 30. The MHA passed an order on August 30 dismissing him from service on grounds related to departmental proceedings that were initiated for talking to the media.
Guj ex-DGP gets temporary bail
The Gujarat high court granted Wednesday temporary bail to former DGP RB Sreekumar till November 15 and permitted him to file fresh application for regular bail before the trial court in connection with charges of fabrication of evidence tied to the 2002 riots. Sreekumar has been in custody since June 25 after Ahmedabad police filed an FIR against him, social activist Teesta Setalvad and ex-IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt.
