While TikTok has been a go-to platform for short-form content, YouTube has been a home for longer duration videos. This could change soon as TikTok is testing the waters with a new feature allowing users to upload videos of up to 30 minutes in length. This shift from its signature short-form content will position it in direct competition with the Google-owned video streaming site.
Reportedly, some users have spotted the option within the iOS beta version of TikTok, signalling a potential expansion beyond the app’s traditional confines. Some Android beta users in the UK have also reported seeing the feature.
TikTok has also been steadily increasing its maximum time limit for posts. Initially, users were allowed to post 15-second clips, and the time limit had been extended to 60 seconds, 3 minutes, 5 minutes and up to 10 minutes in 2022. In October last year, TikTok started to experiment with 15 minute uploads.
Competition to YouTube
With longer videos appearing on the platform, people will have more platforms to post their content to without much restrictions. Notably, YouTube has already launched short-form videos, called Shorts, which is now averaging over 70 billion daily views, as per the company.
From a business perspective, this could also help the Chinese app boost monetisation and revenue sharing potential. Longer form videos allow creators to include pre and more mid-roll ads, and the revenue from them can then be shared with creators directly.
‘Problems’ for TikTok
However, TikTok may face some problems as it has been banned in several regions, including India and is under lens in various states in the US. Furthermore, X (formerly Twitter) also allows creators (with subscription) to post long videos, up to 2 hours.
Last year, X owner Elon Musk claimed that in the first revenue sharing instance, the company released $5 million to creators.
