GUWAHATI: A May 4 video showing a large mob of men parading two naked women in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district went viral on the social media on Wednesday.
Manipur’s Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF), a conglomerate of recognised tribes of the state, in a statement said the video is “evidence of atrocities committed” in the state. The forum said the “despicable scene, which happened on May 4 in Kangpokpi district, shows the men constantly molesting the helpless women who cry and plead with their captors” while being taken “towards a paddy field to be gang-raped.”
The forum said the incident occurred in B Phainom village after it was burnt down and two men were beaten to death by the mob.
A relative of one of the victim women had filed a zero FIR at Saikul police station on the day of the incident on May 4. The case was subsequently referred to Nongpok Sekmai police station in Thoubal district and registered.
The FIR stated that after a mob of 900 to 1,000 raided B Phainom village, five villagers – two men and three women – escaped to a nearby forest. When the Nongpok Sekmai Police rescued them, the mob snatched away the five from police custody and killed one of the men, 56-year-old Soitinkam Vaiphei, on the spot and forced the three women to strip in front of them and one of the women was “brutally gangraped in broad daylight”.
The other male and brother of the rape victim, who tried to protect the modesty of his sister, was also killed by the mob, the FIR stated. Later, with the help of some locals, the three women managed to escape the scene, the FIR said.
“The horrifying ordeal suffered by these innocent women is amplified by the perpetrators decision to share the video, which shows the identity of the victims on the social media,” the forum said.

“The ITLF vehemently condemns the sickening act and demands that the central and state governments, National Commission for Women and National Commission for Scheduled Tribes take cognizance of the offence and take all necessary measures to bring justice to the culprits,” the statement by Ginza Vualzong of the forum’s media and publicity wing said.

A statement issued by Manipur Police said all efforts are being made to nab the culprits. A case of abduction, gang rape and murder, etc. was registered at Nongpok Semai PS (Thoubal district) against unknown armed miscreants and the investigation has been started.
