For the first time in eight weeks, India recorded less than 1 lakh fresh Covid-19 cases in the week ending Sunday, as nearly all states and UTs registered declining numbers and the seven-day test positivity rate fell below 4%, a first since July 7.
Deaths from the virus too recorded a slight decline, with around 275 new fatalities reported during the week, down from 307 in the previous week.
India is likely to log around 80,000 new Covid cases in the week (August 15-21), the lowest weekly number in two months since June 13-19 and a 24% dip from the previous week’s tally (nearly 1.05 lakh). The spurt in cases over the past two months have been attributed to new sub-variants of Omicron.
Nearly all states and UTs, with some exceptions such as Goa, reported a fall in cases, although testing and reporting was somewhat disrupted due to Independence Day and Janmashtami celebrations.
Delhi records a 39% drop in weekly cases, Goa sees a rise
Although most states and UTs reported a decline in Covid cases in the week ending Sunday, the fall was less marked in states like Maharashtra, which posted 12,043 new cases, down marginally (4.5%) from the previous week’s total of 12,608.
Cases remained more or less flat also in Punjab, which (down 3.8%) and Telangana (9%). Goa saw a slight increase (2%) in infections detected during the week.
However, numbers dipped in Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, all of which had seen a spurt last week. Delhi recorded a 39% drop in cases to 9,228 while Haryana numbers fell by 31% and Rajasthan’s by 15%.
Active cases in India too fell below the 1 lakh mark during the week. The sevenday test positivity rate stood at 3.85% on Saturday, down from 4.59% on the same day last week, pointing to a general fall in fresh infections in the country during this period.
Fewer Covid deaths were recorded in the current week, with the cumulative toll at around 275. The exact numbers will be known on Monday when Sunday’s data is received from all states. Delhi, which had reported the highest number of fatalities in India last week at 51, saw death dip to 39 in the current week. Kerala reported 45 deaths, with Sunday’s figure yet to be reported.
