Three people were stabbed to death in at a hotel in Scotland’s Glasgow on Friday.

The stabbing took place at a hotel stairwell in Glasgow’s city centre, according to reports in British media.

The suspect, who remains unidentified at the moment, was later shot by the police.

An eyewitness told Sky News she had seen several people covered in blood being treated by emergency services, and armed police on the scene, at around 1:15 pm (1215 GMT).

Images on social media appeared to show armed police entering a building and a large number of emergency vehicles outside. A heavy police presence on West George Street was in place with more than a dozen police vehicles in attendance.

Confirming the attack, Police Scotland Assistant Chief Constable Steve Johnson said the incident had been contained and there was no wider risk to the public.

He also said that a police officer was injured in the attack and is currently receiving treatment. The Scottish Police Federation said the officer had been stabbed.

“I would like to reassure the public that at this time we are not looking for anyone else in relation to this incident,” Johnson added, suggesting that it was a lone-wolf attack.

Releasing a statement on the attack, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he was “deeply saddened by the terrible incident in Glasgow”.

“Deeply saddened by the terrible incident in Glasgow, my thoughts are with all the victims and their families. Thank you to our brave emergency services who are responding,” he wrote on Twitter.

Nicola Sturgeon, the First Minister of Scotland, also condemned the incident and asked people not to share unverified information.

“The reports from Glasgow City Centre are truly dreadful. My thoughts are with everyone involved. I am being updated as the situation becomes clearer. Please help the emergency services do their jobs by staying away from the area – and please don’t share unconfirmed information,” she said.

Last week, three people died in the southern English town of Reading when a man wielding a five-inch knife went on the rampage in a park. Police said they were treating that incident as terrorism.
