Tamil Nadus Famous Idli Amma Gets New Home, Courtesy Anand Mahindra

Hunger and food insecurity are issues that the world is collectively battling. Millions of people go hungry every day without eating even a single meal. Some citizens are volunteering to do their bit for the needy and provide them with food and water. One example of this would be Tamil Nadu’s famous M. Kamalathal aka Idli Amma – who cooks and serves Idlis to migrant labourers and workers. Idli is priced at just Re.1 in order to make food accessible and affordable for people. Idli Amma’s heart-warming story had gone viral in 2021, with several well-known personalities sharing their appreciation for her selfless venture. The video shared by Anand Mahindra has received over 450k views and 35k likes. The entire story of Idli Amma was narrated in the clip. The construction of the home with the special kitchen for Idli Amma was completed right in time for Mother’s day on Sunday, 8th May 2022. Industrialist Anand Mahindra shared the news on Twitter with his followers. “Immense gratitude to our team for completing the construction of the house in time to gift it to Idli Amma on #MothersDay She’s the embodiment of a Mother’s virtues: nurturing, caring & selfless. A privilege to be able to support her & her work. Happy Mother’s Day to you all,” he wrote in his tweet.

The tweet had originally been shared by Anand Mahindra in September 2019. Calling it a ‘humbling’ and ‘impactful’ venture, he had offered to pay for an LPG stove for Idli Amma. Thanks to the outpour of support, the 80-year-old’s venture not only a gas connection but also a plot of land issued in her name. Click here to read more about it.

Twitter users showered immense praise and respect for industrialist Anand Mahindra helping out Idli Amma by building her home with a special kitchen. “Amazing act of kindness and charity. If only India could be made of more people like yourself and other similar exemplars,” wrote one user. “Fantastic sir. Hats off to you,” said another one.
