NEW DELHI: Hailing the Supreme Court’s judgement upholding the 2016 demonetisation as “historic” and “in the interest of the nation”, BJP on Monday sought an apology from the opposition, especially Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his campaign against the government’s decision.
“It is a historic decision and is in the national interest. The Supreme Court has held a decision taken in the national interest valid. Will Rahul Gandhi now say sorry for his campaign against demonetisation? He spoke against it even abroad,” Senior BJP functionary Ravi Shankar Prasad told a press conference.
Prasad also asserted that demonetisation proved to be the “biggest blow” to terrorism by curbing terror funding. It boosted income tax and cleansed the economy, he claimed.
The apex court in a 4:1 majority verdict upheld the government’s 2016 decision to demonetise Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 denomination notes, saying the decision-making process was not flawed.
He also hit out at senior Congress functionary and former finance minister P Chidambaram, for highlighting the minority judgment. “They are ignoring with impunity the majority verdict to make uncharitable and scandalous statements,” he said.
Prasad said Rahul Gandhi “abused” PM Narendra Modi in his campaign during the 2019 Lok Sabha polls against the alleged corruption in the Rafale deal and stopped only after the apex court adjudicated on the matter and rejected the demand for a probe.
“We know what they said about Rafale. But when SC’s judgement came, they all became silent. Today I want to say with full responsibility that the Congress party in its own way promoted and protected informal economy elements in the country,” Prasad said.
He said the Congress government encouraged middlemen in the country’s economy, even in defence deals by not allowing the Indian Air Force to buy new fighter planes for years.
