In a significant development in the legal saga surrounding one of football’s most decorated players, Dani Alves is set to stand trial from February 5 to 7, 2024, on allegations of sexual assault. The announcement was made by Catalonia’s highest court, marking a pivotal moment in a case that has sent shockwaves through the sporting world.

The Brazilian full-back, renowned for his illustrious career with FC Barcelona and the Brazil national team, faces serious accusations stemming from an incident at a Barcelona nightclub in December 2022. Following his arrest on January 20, 2023, the Barca legend was formally indicted for sexual assault in August.

At that time, the judge had found Alves guilty of wrongdoing. Since then, the Brazilian has been detained at a correctional facility near Barcelona, with the courts denying bail over concerns he might flee the jurisdiction.

Alves, who turned 40 in May 2023, vehemently denies the charges, asserting that he had maintained a consensual relationship with his accuser. However, if convicted, the former footballer could be sentenced to anywhere between four and 15 years in prison. Prosecutors are pushing for a nine-year term, along with a restraining order post-incarceration, and compensation to the alleged victim amounting to €150,000.

Dani Alves’ storied career has seen him amass an unparalleled collection of silverware, including three UEFA Champions League titles and numerous domestic league triumphs across Europe.

His trophy cabinet boasts over 40 major honors, making him one of the most successful footballers in history. Alves was last playing in the Liga MX for UNAM before he was arrested in January this year for sexual assault allegations. The Mexican side decided to terminate his contract after he was arrested.

Despite this, his legacy now hangs in the balance as he confronts allegations that could lead to a lengthy prison sentence and tarnish his achievements on the pitch.
