Australia opening batter David Warner has been appointed the new captain of International League T20 (ILT20) franchise Dubai Capitals for the upcoming 2024 season.

Warner signed a deal with Dubai Capitals, an affiliate of two-time finalists Delhi Capitals, where Warner also plays. Warner has captained franchise sides in the past, guiding SunRisers Hyderabad to their maiden IPL title in 2016.

The 37-year-old will lead the Capitals in the ILT20 2024, which will take place from January 20 to February 18. In the previous ILT20 edition, the Capitals reached the Eliminator match but were defeated by MI Emirates.

Warner is currently facing Pakistan in a three-match Test series at home. Australia has already won the first two matches of the series in Perth and Melbourne and will now face Pakistan in Sydney.

This will be Warner’s final match in Test cricket, having announced that he would be hanging up his boots in red-ball cricket after this series. Warner has been in great form in his farewell series, scoring 208 runs in two matches, including a brilliant 164 in the first innings of the Perth Test.

With Warner’s Test retirement imminent, numerous discussions have arisen regarding Warner’s successor, with Harris, Green, Matt Renshaw, and Cameron Bancroft being mentioned as potential candidates.

Notably, Cameron Green seems to hold an advantage for a Test squad spot, given his recent involvement in successful campaigns like the World Test Championship (WTC) victory and the Ashes in England.

Interestingly, Warner has a good track record in the UAE, having been named the player of the tournament in the 2021 T20 World Cup. Warner scored 289 run in just seven matches en route to Australia triumph.
