Statistics show that the crime rate in Mumbai in the past three months of April, May and June is lower than the rate during the same period last year. Mumbai Police attributes this decrease to the lockdown during which movement was restricted and there was heavy police presence in the city.

The crime rate in Mumbai has drastically gone down. The number of crime cases in the month of April and May have come down compared to previous years. Surprisingly, only two cases of chain snatching were registered in past two months in the city. Reports of crime against women have also come down. There is reduction is cases of chain snatching, theft, house breaks, rape and molestation. However, there have been cases of vehicle theft.

As many as 11,895 criminal cases have been registered in March, April and May out which 9,415 cases are of lockdown violation.

During the lockdown, incidents of street crime have decreased. The reason behind this is that people stayed inside their homes so criminals did not get chance to come out. Also there was heavy presence of cops on the road. There were 199 checkpoints all over the city during the lockdown period, which directly affected the crime rate going down,” said Pranay Ashok, DCP, Spokesperson of Mumbai Police.

In April this year 5,703 cases were registered out of which 5,278 cases are of lockdown violation. While in May, 2,532 cases were registered out of which 1,877 case are of lockdown violation. Compared to earlier years the cases are negligible.

However, Mumbai Police believes that the crime rate may increase in coming months due to several reasons like job losses and opening of the lockdown.
