NEW DELHI: India on Sunday reported 17 more cases of Omicron, taking the total number of cases in the country to 21. Maharashtra on Sunday reported seven more cases of Omicron variant of Covid-19, Jaipur reported nine and Delhi reported the national capital’s first case. Meanwhile, the US and the UK introduced new Covid testing rules for inbound passengers, including ones from India, amid the Omicron scare around the globe.
Jaipur reports 9 Omicron cases
Jaipur has reported 9 cases of Omicron from one family, on Sunday. The said family has a travel history to South Africa. The development in the Rajasthan capital has been confirmed by the state health department.
Maharashtra logs seven more cases
Seven new cases of Covid-19′ Omicron variant were detected in Maharashtra’s Pune district on Sunday. Previously, a 34-year-old man from Kalyan-Dombivli with a travel history from South Africa, had tested positive for the virus. The count of cases infected with the new variant has now gone up to eight in Maharashtra
Screening beefed up in Maharashtra
The state health authorities have been keeping an eagle eye on other passengers arriving at the international airports in Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur since December 1. In the past five days, a total of 28,221 passengers arriving by international flights have been surveyed, including 4,901 from the ‘high risk’ countries. A total of 5,444 passengers have been subjected to RT-PCR tests, including 543 from other countries and 4,901 from the “high risk” countries of whom 9 samples have been sent for genomic sequencing. The state has appealed to all people that all those who have had international travel history in the past one month must get their doses on priority.
Delhi reports India’s fifth case
A 37-year-old fully vaccinated man who arrived in Delhi from Tanzania has tested positive for Omicron, making it the first case of the new Covid-19 variant in the national capital. This is the fifth case of Omicron reported in the country. The patient, a resident of Ranchi, had travelled from Tanzania to Doha and from there to Delhi on a Qatar Airways flight on December 2. He stayed in Johannesburg, South Africa, for a week, officials said. The person is “fully vaccinated” and is currently admitted to the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital with “mild symptoms”, an official said.
New testing rules for inbound US, UK travellers
The US and the UK have made it mandatory for all incoming passengers, including those from India, to carry a negative Covid-19 test report or proof of recovery from the contagion amid the rising number of Omicron cases.
In the US, the new protocol will come into effect from December 6. The UK will implement the measures from December 7.
The first three cases in India
Gujarat’s first case of Covid-19’s Omicron variant was reported in Jamnagar district on Saturday. Two close contacts of the Zimbabwe-returned patient later tested Covid-positive. They are suspected to be infected by the same variant. India’s first two Omicron cases were detected in Karnataka, the health ministry had said. One of those infected is a 66-year-old person who travelled from South Africa, whereas another is a 46-year-old anaesthetist in Bangalore, an official said.
